The real deal I see with a lot of people is they never really get tired of riding their Harley' They take them on long trips go everywhere we go. The difference is they can never get tired of riding their bike because its on the trailer to quick to get tired on it.

Now I base my comments on about 12 people I know who have purchased new ones to go on trips in the past 10 years. Not one made the trip without a layover with bike in shop or a trailer bringing it back.

I have no real kick against Harleys, my first bike was a "45". Then I rode other bikes and found I liked them better, particularly in-line 4s like my XJ and Concours.

For many years, on long-distance rides to rallies and such, I didn't see that many HDs on the road, mostly Hondas and BMWs. Last 7 - 8 years have been different and I see quite a few more Harleys on long rides.

A Harley would not be my first or second choice if I were looking for a new bike, but there is no doubt that if you are more into image than substance a Harley can be customized with off-the-shelf bits and pieces that can make it one of a kind without having to do much fabrication.

Years ago I stopped at a shop in Madison, Wisconsin that sold several bike lines, and I took a moment to look at mileages on some of their used bikes. Most of the Harleys had fewer miles on them than I put on in a year, and there were 2 - 4 year old models. But...I also see stories of very low-mileage XS11s out there as well.

The fact is that Harley sells an image as well as hardware, and they do it better than any other bike manufacturer.

since I was 9 yrs old I wanted a Harley and always loved the big Electra Glide...still like them although i dont particularly care for the image or mentality most "bikers" conform to...There are a few like Brent who really do ride the crap outta their Harleys and then theres the posers....

My favorite comment was the guy claiming the CB750 or Honda Hawk has a "self adjusting valve train." Yeah, It goes out of adjustment all by itself just like every other bike ever made.
