I got hoem from a short ride today where in the middle of the ride I got a pretty rough low end miss and stutter. Having just completed the VF1000 coil upgrade, I guessed I had a loose wire issue. As I started pulling the seat I found my right side muffler had a crack clean through going about 80% around the pipe, right where the sleeve was welded to the muffler as it expands. So, I am now in need of replacement Mufflers and my budget is pretty limited since I just had to replace my AC unit on the house. I have read a few folks picking up some HD mufflers and having good luck running them. Wondering if there are any to lean toward or avoid, before I go contacting the local HD stealerships.

From what I've seen that's pretty typical for the Special exhaust for some reason, and the right side is usually the culprit. But rather than replace it, why not just have it rewelded? The 'heat shield' will cover the repairs, and anybody with a MIG can weld that up...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Steve, It is an aftermarket exhaust. Originally sold to me on Fleabay as a Kerker 4-2. As Phil has stated to me a few times, he has never heard of a Kerker 4-2. Neither have I but it was relatively cheap at $60 + shipping. So I wen with it and it got me this far.
It has never really fit quite right, I think it may have been intended for a Standard. And it has no crossover or I would think it was a Jardine from the shape of it. Anyway, I think the reason it failed is it had to be pulled pretty hard to get it mounted up to the rear mount and not rub the swing arm. So long story short, I have been considering going with something else, but now my hand is forced.

When you go to the Hardley dealer, look in the ends of the mufflers. Both ends. Use a good flashlight. Some of them have a catalytic element in the inlet side, some don't.
The cat would be another source of back pressure, especially if it got gunked up with oil.
Not to say you have an oil burner, but if the cat doesn't get hot enough, it won't burn the crap off. So if you do short runs, and don't get the mufflers good and hot, not only will the cat foul, but the mufflers will rust, and if you run 40 PSI in the rear tire, you will crash and die.

You could still reweld this, but the repair will show. The upside is, the 'strain' will gone...

cut from the tip down past the break and keep it on the back-side adjust to a stress free angle and weld it up clean and polish after.

Nope, and they will also lack the crossover of the later sporty muffs, so those would be a decent choice. The downside is the mounting brackets aren't symmetrical. The '04-07 Sporty muffs have the crossover, no cats, but do have symmetrical mounts, so fabbing something would be a bit easier. And even the later muffs with the cat only have it in one muffler AFAIK, so if you can find two sets cheap enough, you can discard the cat versions...Originally posted by DGXSER View PostFast, Cheap, Reliable... Have him bring them to work, and take the head pipe off of one of them. Look inside with a flashlight. If you have some fabrication skills, and the appropriate tools, they can be made to fit, with a cross over. CZComment

Those cats would be designed to run with that 880cc 2 cylinder engine, they would certainly get hot enough on an 1100cc 4 cylinder to stay clean with unleaded fuel. However they would create a little back pressure, not necessarily a bad thing if you like some bottom end power. It might hurt at the higher RPMs though.

Hardly mufflers
I got a set of new Hardly mufflers from the local HD dealer for free and I've seen 'em on fleabay for $10. Mine sound nice, and I didn't need to rejet or anything and it runs as good as any stock bike you can find and better than any modified with aftermarket pipes. I keep telling everyone this, but it seems people here have VERY SHORT memories. Those that have seen mine will vouch for what I say...You can't stay young forever, but you can be immature for the rest of your life...
