  • dots on cam

Reading ahead regarding replacement of the tensioner and that I will be replacing my cams and may be removing the head & need to have the chain set properly with cams & crank, I can't find a photo of the dots on the cam that they refer to that should be aligned with arrows when the timing plate is at C.

Any photo out there or a suggestion?

    Thanks!

    Important

Only yesterday I did what you're asking about IMPORTANT... the dots on the camshafts must line up with the T mark on the rotor, NOT the C as you said in your post. The C mark is for setting camchain tension after everything else is done. If you set the camshaft dots to the C mark, you'll have big trouble.

Re the dots on the camshafts. They are unmissable. Each camshaft is held in by five clamps which are numbered 1-5. Clamp #1 should be the furthest left as you sit on the bike. The dots are on a circular rim immediately next to clamp 3 of each camshaft. Great big dots punched in the circular bit. You can't miss them. Clamp 3's have an arrow on them to line up the dots on the camshafts. Your timing rotor must be set at T, as mentioned above. Then, having done all that and got the chain on, you then rotate the crank clockwise, using the square end on the timing rotor, until the C lines up. Then you're ready to undo the nuts etc on the camchain tensioner.

Since I'm having to use a PROXY server to access the site right now, I can't provide the link to the thread with the photos. If you'll either scroll to the 4th page..or maybe the 5th page if it gets scrolled to the next page, look for a thread called Cam Chain Removal or replacement....posted by JAMES ENGLAND, then you'll see the photo from 3Phase/Scott showing the cams and the dots and alignment marks.

HOWEVER, have you found Catatonic Bugs profile and service manual links where you can download them, then you should have plenty of tech photos to view, as well as the R&R procedures for the cams/chain and such?

        dots

if you don't see the dots tthe first time you rotate to the T, rotate once more, they'll be there.

          beautiful! just perfect & thanks!

I'd looked on the manual for photos of the dots but didn't see them portrayed when talking about cam chain. I found a reference photo to the dot later but the photo by 3Phase on the link to James' post http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32812 was perfect.

And thanks for the correction when I wrote C, I meant to write T but had just reviewed the cam chain tensioner section.

The mind is the 2nd thing to go. Never mind the first...

I did read the "center cap for each cam is dowel pinned" What does "dowel pinned" mean? is that like a clevis pin? Something I need to tap out to remove it?

          Thanks

            pins

No need to touch them at all, they are for alignment and orientation of the cap

Ah. Think that's all I need to know before going ahead tomorrow. I'm going to try & get photos of all the different stages of disassembly & photos of whatever is obvious to the eye that looks worn.

If I run into something unexpected then I can post a description and photo & hopefully get help for myself; then it'll always be available for the next person with the same problem to find ready made answers to.

              Win Win!

              Cheers

Presumably, you'll be re-setting the valve clearances? Make sure you have spare shims. Youcanalways shuffle the ones that are in the bike, as I did a few days ago, but you will most probably need spares.
