  • Ugliest Carbs ever. Help?

I've been working on my XS and I pulled the carb bank out and started to clean them. They are so nasty, I have to leave them in a can of carb dip that I got from work for over an hour to get this gunk off of the float bowls alone. What rubber do I need to worry about in my carb before I go and toss the whole thing in?

I think it's far less hassle to just keep spraying with carb cleaner and then a stiff brisled brush. And then blow all passages with compressed air.

If you still want to soak them, you will have to remove the throttle plates and shafts as there are rubber seals on each side of the carb body. Throttle plate screws are peened over so they won't loosen off and are areal PIA to remove. Also, the slide assemblies have to be removed.

      Carbs

I have to agree with Brian here. As long as you take ALL the jets out including the emulsifiers and use carb or combustion chamber cleaner, as well as blowing out all the passages you will have less possibility of damaging your carbs. Check out the carb cleaning threads on the site good luck . .............MITCH

I don't know if I'll even be able to clean these carbs well enough to run properly. Does anyone know about how much I would spend on a working bank? I wouldn't think more than $250, but I don't know how realistic that is.

Allow yourself plenty of time. What I used was several cans of carb cleaner, air hose.Take your time.I sprayed my linkages, good first and then the disassembly of each carb while cleaning.Don`t get the parts mixxed up.Easier to do one at a time. Not as bad as it looks.Hope this helps.

                carb repair

Does anybody know of a good source for carb kits, or just the gaskets even? I'd like to go through 'Organ Donors' carbs before transplanting them and the engine in 'Twilite Special'. The last time I did the carbs on 'TS' the cost was over $25 per carb, and I really didn't need many of the hard parts in the kits. That was years ago, and most of these spare parts 'evaporated' over time. I hate to start tinkering on them before I have parts in hand, but I don't know what I'll need, either.
In doing this transplant, is it best to have the carbs running the jetting for a 78E engine in an 80SG, OR setting the jets to the 80 specs? Emissions testing isn't a problem here, so I'm not worried about that. From what I've read, the 78 made the most power, before emission standards were set for the later bikes.

                Any ideas?

A local Yamaha dealership here sells rebuild kits for $20. I imagine you could find them cheaper elsewhere. Also, upon closer inspection, one of the float pin supports (that the float pin goes through) is completely missing above the pin. Ideas?

                        John

Bill, that place has some great prices! Looks like I'll be ordering my carb parts from them. I had a question here, but it got lost in the shuffle. Maybe you can help. I'm going to put the engine from a 78 E into my 80 SG. I've read that the 78 was the most powerful, so should I use the SG's carbs, with it's smaller jets, rejet them with same size as the E's or just use the carbs from the E model?

                          John,

I really don't know but I think all the carbs were the same size so you could just jet them to give the right mixture. I think that you will be OK with either set of carbs as long as you keep them as a set and don't mix the carbs from one set in with the other.

My carbs were really yucky inside and I finally had to drill out the pilot jets. They probably had never been removed and had become one with the carb bodies. Odd, since the PO said the carbs had just been "gone through". It was scary but everything turned out OK.

                            Update

I just got a can of PB Blaster and a whole bunch of Carb Cleaner (Hoorah for employee discounts) and I've started the cleaning process. Is there anything wrong with letting my jets sit in Chem-Dip?
