                                Sorry to resurrect an old thread. As a first gear oil change on a new-to-me machine, I went searching for the oil weight/rating to pour into the beast. The amount of controversy surrounding the GL-4/GL-5 lubricants is enormous. I went digging on the inter-webs, and found a number of interesting things.

                                First, it turns out that one GL-5 oil is not like to another GL-5: different manufacturers will use different type, quality, and level of additives in their oils, some of which are claimed to attack "yellow metals." The evidence of adverse effects of GL-5 seems anecdotal, however. The closest to an official statement about GL-4 VS. GL-5 controversy comes from a 2007 email by a Castrol sales rep to a forum for Bronco enthusiasts. The email states that these oils are engineered for fundamentally differing systems, and are not interchangeable.

                                Among other useful goodies, this gem contains a brief answer to the GL-5 question on page 9. For our purposes, it seems that GL-4, GL-5, and the obsolete GL-6 oils of appropriate weight are interchangeable. I am unfamiliar with the composition of our transmission, but this makes me assume two things: (1) our transmission does not contain many parts machined out of yellow metals, and (2) given that this manual is published by YAMAHA, GL-5 is benign enough to be used harmlessly in our systems. If either of these is true, then, given the higher apparent utility of GL-5 oils, they should be our rating of choice.

                                And that's all I have to say about that.
