  • 2nd Gear Repair update needed

Thanks to all who have written on this procedure: Jerry, T.C., Chris Rawson, Ken Talbot. There are many others who are no longer on the list.

There is a lot of second gear repair information that isn't available here in the XS11.com > Repairs > Transmission section.
    • Ken Talbot's XS11 Page has eleven separate pages of information.
    • On the other XS11 list, ALLXS11S, TopCat did a great second gear write up with lots of pix and a nice graphic. It's in the Files section under Tips and Tricks.

It would be great if we could gather this info and make it available here.

    Bill,

TopCat also did the same graphic (I think) in a reply here. I will copy this to TUC's (Bill knows what I mean) and hopefully somebody will tackle it in the cold darkness of the upcoming winter.

      Hey there Gary, and Bill,

That graphic is rather large, and even in jpg format, it's over 200kb, I didn't want to reduce/compress it too much otherwise it would have been harder to make out the text in it!

The mass of photos that I posted to the Yahoo site is over 3MB, there are about 25 pictures, I tried to keep them under 100kb each. The written text is a bit more than just the 2nd gear, it's essentially the entire tear down process which includes tips for the clutch removal/replacement, flipping the bike over for ease of access, etc.. The text is 25kb worth in plain Notepad format!

I'd be happy to upload the pictures if JP feels there's enough space for them, and am willing to assist in the creation of this tech tip any way I can.

I replied here instead of in the Tech Tips Under Construction "copy" ....I think the reply feature is turned off anyways there! Let me know what I need to do.

One solution would be to break down the graphic into the individual pictures without text, and re-create the page in HTML or vBcode. The text would be included separately in the code. You've done the hard work... the conversion is easy!

It's a nice group of information as it stands... all relevant and useful. There's no reason a tech tip needs to be limited to a single part of the procedure. Or, it could be broken up into two or more units such as the "Inverted Bike Technique", R&R of the gears, and undercutting gears, or something similar. The plain Notepad text is perfect for doing the code conversion.

As you said, the final call regarding bandwidth is with JP. I say, "Go for it!". I can't recall seeing such a helpful and complete tech tip in a long time. I appreciate having the discussion here where I can contribute. I'll be happy to help out if there's any part you'd like me to do.

For my part, I already have all the info. I read through it because I need to do this for my GSX-R. Unfortunately, it appears that the engine case must be split to access the gears. At least that's what everyone says. When I do it I'll follow your example and photo-document EVERYTHING!
