Thanks, That's what I thought too. Now I just gotta go find a cam plug. I lost it on the road last month on a test drive when all of this happened.
Cheapest I've found is $3 at PartsNMore and #3.95 at OldBikeBarn, but both had about $8 s/h. Ebay has 4 for $13. I guess I'll get 4, that way I'll have some spares.

Im working on getting several aluminum cam plugs made, its going to be another week plus before I have them finished. They will have a double lip (inside and outer side) so they cannot come out. Wont know what they cost till they are done... post will me made when they are ready.

for the stock plugs, does it matter which way they get put in? lip inside or out?

Lok agasin at the intake valves vlearances, it changed for the 80-81 model year so you may be fine with what you have on some of those. I believe it went to .11-.15.

I have cut a gasket fo the valve cover before, not fun, it worked, but no fun. I used RTV last time around. Worked fine, much easier and cleans up a little easier as well, and cheaper.

The problem with running with the valves to tight is the chance of burning the valves. Yoru nto really THAT tight, but if your in this far, it really is only a rainy afternoon away to finish the job. Chances are good you can find a local bike shop with the 29 mm shims they will sell you for $2-$4 a piece. Loosening / removing the cam caps is the easiest way I found to do it, no special tool required and goes pretty quick, just be sure to stuff a rag in the cam chain tunnel so nothing drops into the pit of hades there.
Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

When your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.

I read on here of someone putting the lip to the inside, just going to have a cavity there as the plug isn't solid... they are meant to have the lip on the outside...

                update

Got the bike mostly put back together Sunday. Cleaned the air filter & Box, gapped the plugs, put new coils on, (the old spark plug wires were nasty), cleaned the carbs and fixed a broken battery post bolt. with the valve cover on with 4 bolts and no gasket, I went ahead and tried to see if she'd run. YAHOO! fired up on all 4 cyclinders and idled okay. DIdn't run it for long, no gasket/cam plugs yet, and I haven't put the tank back on yet. (easier clearance for the valve cover)
I want to again thank all of you that have offered your sage advice on things during my 'break down & rebuild'.

There's just something about this bike that I've gotten so attached to. How easy it would be to go get a new one, but I can't seem to find one that I like. (there's nothing like that straight 4 shaft drive that just zooms right out of the gate.)
