  • Mystery wire... SG bucket

Well, I've been cleaning up/repairing/connecting the harness on the SG for multiple days now, and I'm down to the headlight bucket. Of course, every harness I had to choose from had been butchered for a fairing except one, and that one looked like it was chopped on just for the h**l of it.

I'm down to five, maybe six wires left to connect, but I'm getting strange meter readings through some of them.

I've got the black, green, and yellow which should be the headlight, but I'm reading continuity through/between them all the time; is this because of the reserve lighting unit?

I've got a single red, but I'm assuming that's the 'spare' wire that Yamaha left in the bucket for 'future'; its partner the blue wire is nowhere to be seen...

I've got a larger brown wire, that appears to be the power feed for the brake light switch.

And lastly, I found a small black mystery wire (almost missed it because it's cut off inside the vinyl cover) that appears to be a ground, but I'll be if I can figure out what that may have gone to, if anything. Ignore?

Not knowing what 'real' bucket wiring should look like in one of these, do these sound right? I'm a bit distrustful of the diagram, due to the discrepancies I've run into, so thought I'd ask...

Steve, I happen to still have my 80SG apart and the weather finally turned (though I typically ride year around.)
The only black wire not part of one of the connectors is the ground to the turn signals as far as I can see. It tees at the connector and the grounds are eyelets that are sandwiched between the washers and nut that holds the turn signals the bucket.
You are on track with the extra red and light blue, too.
You are also correct on the headlight colors and I didn't check continuity.
    Hope that helps!

That helps, and I appreciate it; I was hoping for someone with a unmolested bike to check against.

While I've found the wire colors to be accurate, the connections aren't always as shown on the diagram, and it pretty much fails completely in showing the grounds. With any luck, I'll get the wiring done tomorrow and power it up and check for factory smoke...

Hope your smoke stays in! Its pretty hard to catch it and put it back in once it gets out.
