  • 77 Yamaha, magneto cover gasket?

    does anyone know where to find one? my search is fruitless, any ideas?

    Cut one form gasket material from any local auto parts store. Or simpler yet, RTV. Kind of overkill, it is not really a wet area.

      I've never had that cover off, but another member told me a while ago that the only actual gasket these bikes need is the head gasket. You can use gasket maker for the rest. You could also buy some gasket paper and make your own if you have an exacto knife and ten minutes. You just put some used oil on the mating surface of the cover, and use it like a stamp so that you know where to cut.

        Hi Kev,
        you sure your XS1100 is a '77? Clymers sez the first one was a '78.
        If you are using magneto as a search word you won't see any hits because the XS11 don't have one.
        The left engine side casting covers the advance mechanism, ignition triggers and timing plate.
        It's just a dust cover, use gasket compound if you like, or don't bother.
        The right engine side casting covers the alternator. This one needs a gasket &/or gasket compound.

          It is a 79, my bad. Just a typo, I use to have a 77 maverick. I just didnt look it over. Do you think I even need a gasket there?

            The gasket on mine is in pieces, and really does little good, but I've never had a problem with it. The main reason for that gasket is to keep road water OUT of the alternator. So, yeah, some kind of gasket there is probably a good idea, especially when riding in the rain or washing the bike.

              As Bug said, it's keeping stuff out, not keeping stuff in, so some sort of seal is a good idea. RTV will work fine as theres no worries about excess squeezing out on the inside and blocking galleries etc. Personally, as i'm sure you've already read, I use 3 Bond but if you haven't got any then RTV may be easier to find at your local hardware store.
