Just back from the boneyard. Got two auto cct's off of two 83 venturers. Got them for $20.00 apiece. All I had to do is go to the Venturer part of the yard ( who knew ). As soon as I got the first one off I could see what all the fuss is about. These are pretty slick little deals. I was a little worried though cause there wasn't the plastic rider on the end of the plunger and I didn't remember anybody mentioning anything about it. Just to be safe I pulled the cam cover and cams out and yup there wasn't any reason to worry. I'll be putting them on sometime this week. In order to richen up the fuel mix I'm going to start with an eighth of a turn cause I know I set all four exactly at 1 1/4 turns out according to my trusty Clymer. What do ya think ? more maybe or less ?

Ryno, the idle mixture screw settings should let you get the engine started, then you're supposed adjust them for each cylinder when you synchronize the carburetors so it looks like you're on the right track!
The missing shoe on the automatic cam chain tensioner causes a mild 'ringing' sound at cruising speed when the metal backing plate of the cam chain guide rattles against the barefoot tensioner.
It doesn't hurt anything, it's just a new, different, sound in the engine. Think of it as the sound of not having to adjust your cam chain every couple of thousand miles and twice on weekends.-- Scott

Yup I've got a pretty good set of carb sync gauges, but it's looking like I won't be able to get to it till Saturday. I've got a color tune also. I don't mind listening to a little different song, I've had a cam chain snap at 55mph it's a real attention getter. Thanks.

The long version of the song off the LP with the Venture Tensioner singing happily to itself along with the engine isn't bad at all; definitely nowhere near as annoying as that really short rap cut released by Snap Cammy Chain and it doesn't ruin your engine the first time you hear it!-- Scott

on the stock manual adjusting cct there is a nylon ( or some similar plastic type material ) shoe that is attached to the rod that pushes against the rider that actually pushes against the cam chain to create the tension needed. The Venture auto cct does not have this nylon shoe it is just a straight steel shaft. I didn't realize that that rider was in there on the 81 and 79 and I suspect on most other bikes. I'm not a bike mech just a guy learning. If I had time this morning I'd try to get a picture. I am sure that there are guys here that could explain this better than I have.

I don't have any tensioners or cam chain guides out of the engine and photographable at the moment so you'd have to look at one of the online parts diagrams.
The front (tensioner) side of the XS11 cam chain guide underneath the exhaust camshaft has two pieces: a metal load bearing plate or rider and the actual metal-backed chain guide. The rear chain guide underneath the intake camshaft is just the metal-backed chain guide with no rider.
The cam chain tensioner foot presses against the metal rider that's hinged on the bottom of the front chain guide. The metal rider in turn presses on the actual metal back of the front chain guide.
As Ryno said, the XS11 tensioner has a vulcanized rubber or plastic noise damper shoe bonded to the foot of the tensioner rod, the Venture tensioner does not, it's just bare metal. When the three pieces of metal that make up the front chain guide and the tensioner foot all start to vibrate together faster and faster as the engine speeds up they make a ringing, singing, harmonic song along with the engine.-- Scott

Sometimes the springs are bad, missing one or just need a bit of grease in the shaft to be able to move freely.
When the plate does not return it idles high until you correct it by releasing the clutch.

Mine is a 79F and that was exactly my problem, a broken spring in the vaccum advance. I was unaware the more modern ones did not have the same system.

I know it's been a few days since I responded to this thread but I thought I better get back to ya'll . I put in the venture cct sounds fine no issues.
The really important thing to me is I got out my color tune along with the carb sync gauges and went to work. Earlier in this thread some suggested that the problem might be a too lean condition. Yup that was it. I am a little embarrassed to have to admit this, but maybe this will help someone else. When I said that I had the fuel mix screws out like my manual said I thought that was it. But, as 3phase said that is just to get it started. Going over the color tune directions again I got to work. I can't believe that the bike was running as well as it was considering how starved for fuel it was. Turned the screw till I got a good blue fire in each cylinder, went through them twice got a really tight setting on all four sync gauges and this bike is finally running like it's 1981 again. Idles down fine and growls when I crank on it. Thanks guys. Took me while to get back to this thread cause it's been so much fun riding it again and I got caught up in other threads.
