Hi and welcome. I suggest you take the carbs off and thoroughly clean them and see what jets you have in there, if any are plugged and what your float heights are. After that, synchronize them. I have a '79 as well and it wasn't running well after sitting for almost a year. The guys here convinced me to do what I just suggested that you do and the results couldn't be better. Don't be afraid to do it, you'll get lots of help here. BTW, at least synchronize the carbs. If the one is out of synch with the others you can get all kinds of weird symptoms including the backfiring.

No offence ment, but if you dont know where the mixing screws are you probably didnt get the carbs clean. Follow this link here and do through the carbs again. It usually takes new people a few tried before they finally get them clean, I think I was at #4 before I finally cleaned EVERYTHING in the carbs so don't feel bad. Also when you are in there look at the jets and see what size they all are and also measure the float height when you are in there.

Synchronizing the carbs is a snap. Basically all you do is attach four hoses to the nipples on the inlet boots and turn three screws until they all read the same on the synch tool. This is an oversimplification, but if you read the info on this site you will do it very easily. I got a nice synch tool off ebay for 78 bucks.
