  • Turn signals do not flash

I have started restoring my 78 xs11 again; I had started last summer but got busy and never got very far

Anyway, the front fairing is gone and I am missing the front turn signal stalks and headlight.

For the headlight, I am just going to get some universal headlight brackets off eBay. For the turn signals, I was going to leave them off but as a result, my signals do not flash. I did not know if there was a way to get this like wiring a resistor inline or what not.

    Thanks for the help

I don't know the laws in your state, but in most states thats the quick way to getting the attention of the law enforcement officers and a way you don't want to and ending up with a fixit ticket, and then you generally must have have DOT approved lights, which almost always means OEM, which are very hard to come by. However, if you put some on now, you can generally get away with whatever cheap ones you can find that your happy with. However, unless they draw the same as the normal signals, they still won't flash.

I removed the fairing on my 78 also..

I made some front turn signals for my '78 by using the small square marker lights from the auto store. Since the correct SQUARE blinker units for the 78 are as rare as hens teeth, I made some metal brackets and painted them black with the small square lights. They work great and look awesome too.

I added bullet connectors so I can install my blinkers or the fairing quickly.

My flasher unit was b0rked so the regular blinkers worked intermittently. I ended up purchasing an electronic blinker from the parts store for 12 bux. Made a simple adapter so I didn't cut any wires to replace the original one.

Now, I can run LED lights if I want to. Figure the original blinker-cancel circuit didnt work I want out anything.

I suggest adding front blinkers, and an electronic unit. The wiring diagram from the Clymer manual helps alot too.

I personally don't like the turn signals on my SG because of the way they mount on the front and back.Years ago i deceived to replace the front signal lights with aftermarket Lockhart signals. Now i can actually see the signals because they are mounted in the bucket near the stock locations. And think they are brighter than the stock ones.

          dont quote me

but I think the system will not blink unless you have front and rear blinkers connected or some other bypass of sorts.

Don't know for sure but I never had blinkers until I put on my fairing recently and they do not blink but stay on. I was told that's due to not having rear blinkers attached.

again don't quote me, just what I was told

The OEM flasher is very touchy when it comes to the watt load that it sees. If it does not have the same or very close to the same load it will not flash, just like on a cage when one of the blubs burn out the others on that side do not flash.

I also agree, find some turn sigs for the front. and go with the electronic flasher.
