  • Gas Tank Question

Found this tank on Craigslist and the guy will take $40 for it, but I am wondering if it is a tank that will fit on my 80 SG. Anybody have any idea what this is off, or is there a way to find out what the tank is from? Like a part # on the bottom or an ID. Any info would be great...thanks.

Still have to call the guy and see what kinda shape it is in, but I dont wanna bother if it doesn't fit. Looks like it could fit and has 2 petcocks, but I'm not sure.

    Let me know.

Yep. Looks right. The only other thing to look for are the mounting points under the tank that hold the frame rails. The ones on the smaller bikes are in different positions.

I'd be careful, those silver emblems look like the kind on a smaller cc bike. Look for the cut-outs in the bottom side seams that are needed to clear the 11's valve cover, the smaller cc bikes didn't have this.

Is it just my eyes or does that petcock look different from the 1100 special???

Yes it does, good catch. Looks like it sticks out further.

That is what I thought. Different petcocks and the chrome emblems lead me to believe that it is for a different bike. Maybe I will see if it is still available tomorrow and check it out on my way home rather than making an hour trip to find it won't fit. It is just 10 mins outa my way from work. Hopefully I get more response on this and we can make a determination :P

If anything it would be worth the chrome emblems since those are like 30 bucks themselves and I like the look.

              Thanks for the replies!

The petcocks look to be aftermarket, have that hose spigot handle look to them.

Those silver emblems may or may not be a fit for an 11 tank. I know I got a set of tank badges for an XJ650 and they do not quite fit. I can redrill holes to make them fit.

I have a black tank and side covers I know are from a xs11 80 sg. Tank needs a liner, lock tab tooth is gone on the one side cover.

                    Hi Lance,
it's hard to tell from that photo but to me it looks more like the tank from an XS650 Special.
If there's only one gas tap it's a late model XS650 tank for sure.
If there's two, don't go by the gas tap's design, they could easily be aftermarket replacements.
Go by the tank's tunnel width. XS650 tank has a narrow tunnel to fit it's single top frame tube.
XS11 tank has a super-wide tunnel to fit it's dual top tube frame.
You need an underneath or a front view to be sure.
