Hi Folks. Is there any difference in the diameter of the the brake discs between different models of XS1100? The reason I ask is that I bought a pair of NOS front discs, supposexly for an XS1100 but they are smaller in diameter that the ones on my bike!

Nope, the 11 rotors are all the same diameter.... what you got was a set off a 750 or 850, which IIRC are a smaller diameter.

There's two flavors of XS/XJ11 discs; the '78-79 non-slotted rotors, and the '80-82 slotted (for the US/Canada). I don't know if the 'rest of the world' bikes followed that timeline, but they're all functionally/dimensionally identical.
Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

    '81H more parts...

I really messed up! I received the new discs, which I bought on the description that they were for the XS1100. I didn't check the diameter and, away from the bike they are very very similar. Then, several days later...... I sold my other discs! What an idiot. I even put the new discs on the wheel and rode it for the first time today. When I got back, I thought the wear pattern looked very odd..... only the outer half of the disc had been affected by the pad. Then, on closer inspection, I realised that the disc was smaller in diameter. And I thought I knew what I was doing with these bikes! Looking at it now, I can't believe how I didn't notice.

Is there any kind of XS11.com prize which I'd be eligible to win for this piece of idiocy? If not, any suggestions as to what it might be? Maybe a new thread could be started, like a kind of XS1100 confessional where everyone has to post the daftest thing they've ever done when working on their bike. Just to show that we're all human and not as super-cool as we probably feel when out on the bikes!

        James, your perspective is off..

Order your new discs and then plan which XS850 part you are gonna order NEXT to build your triple 1 part at a time

          Hey there James,

There's a recent confessional thread in the member's lounge at this link:
          http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32583

I tried to find the other thread...something about the dumbest thing someone's done, but couldn't find it?

          Oh well, it's only money!

Yep, only money and not a lot at that, in the scheme of things. I've found a couple of discs (probably not as good as the ones I sold!) but I rode the bike today with the undersized discs as I had to have transport. The brakes still stop the bike fine but obviously it's not acceptable and you'll soon see them for sale on eBay.

Or maybe I should post a tech tip ... XS750 disc swap.....

Ooh, what a pain. Any chance of reimbursement? Maybe the seller still has the actual XS1100 discs, and shipped the wrong ones?

You have the option of new rotors. A few variants are available at 650 Central. XS11 rotors are dimensionally the same as those on a XS650.
