  • How do you tell the difference between FD's

    I don't want this to become another discussion about the longevity of the FD swap or anything like that!!

    I know I read it somewhere in some of the recent FD threads but I cannot find it when going through the threads. How can you physically tell the difference from the outside between the 1100 and the 850-750 FD and then the difference between the type 1 and type 2 FD and which if the 2 types is more conducive to the swap?

    Nate, if you shine a flashlight thru the spokes of the rear wheel from the right side of the bike, you can see the ID number on the top inboard side of the final drive. 2H700 is the number for the stock 11 drive, 1J7Y0 is the number for the 750/850 drive.

    As for telling the the early 750 from the late 750/850 type, the latter has a phillips screw on the front bearing plate that helps hold it in it's correct location that the earlier does not. It has to be off the bike to see this screw.

      The philips screw on the front plate like the 1100 FD has? Any Idea what years they switched?

        Yes, like the 11, don't know what year for sure, 77 or 78?

            I belive 79 was the year they switched to the type II.

              Yeah, just wanted to make sure. Picked one up today for under $20 shipped. Really wasn't planning on it right now, but I can't pass up a deal!

                    Yes, I know.... well documented by me and several others. I've already done it, love it and have posted on this forum about it. I wanted to know what Nathan personally thought of the swap, once he's done it.

                        I bought the drive. I will most likely be waiting a while to do the swap. I dont have a ton of miles on the oem one with the bike running well so I want to get a feel for it before and then after. I will most certainly let everyone know what I think though.

                          Just want to be clear!

                          I've been reading the tech tip with pictures (which is great btw) because who doesn't like pictures, it says

                          "On a type it is about 10 inch pounds. On a type two (read 850) it is 3.4 to 4.3 inch-lbs."

                          So I picked up that 750 final drive and it has the phillips screw on the front plate. Is that a number I? Then is it 10 inch pounds?

                          Just want to be sure as I may try to squeeze this in on Sunday, but its also suppose to be nice riding weather too. I have a hard time starting projects on nice riding days.

                          Oh and maybe I missed something but is either more conducive to the swap? I or II?

                            If it has the phillips head scrw it is the type II. It was on the XS750 for the 79 model year.
