  • xj1100 charging problem

this is my first post here so please be gentle.
first off i have tried searching but i have not quite found what exactly i was looking for or have tried things and not found it worked yet.
so i have a charging problem i think. bat. does not charge and tac is dead in theory these equal a charging problem. now ive read lots about the brushes that need to be replaced the only thing is that im new to motorcycles and i cannot locate their position on the bike. can anyone describe to me (pictures would be amazing) where these brushes are so i can inspect them or possibly replace them? or give me hints on what else to check to fix said problem? that will help me take care of one of my few problems getting her back on the road.

    my bike is a 1984 Maxim 1100 (xj1100)

thanks to all that help as well as everyone resources like this make me fall in love with my bike all over again. and im excited to try and do my part in growing our xs/xj community.

    cheers

Unless your bike has some higher mileage on her I would guess the brushes have not wore out yet. I would first check the big white plug behind the fuse panel. Often times that plug will melt and stop things from charging. Clean that plug if possible or replace it (or direct connect the wires if need be) and I bet that will solve your problems.

As to where the brushes are you would have to removed the right side engine cover (the one that says Yamaha on it), the alt is under that cover and when you pull that out you would have access to the brushes.

        Hey there GTX,

Locate a reply from User Catatonic Bug, go to his profile, and find his download links for the manuals!!!

        Also, follow this link: http://www.yamaha-motor.com/partview....aspx?ls=sport
and select from the drop down menu, MOTORCYCLE, then year, model, and then SECTION and you can see exploded views of every system on the bike.

Then you can view images like this one of the Alternator!

          Whoa, doggies!
$60 dollars (plus or minus) for a brush?
If anyone needs one, or two, since they both have the same miles, (the inside one just didn't travel as far), I will see if the local motor rebuilder has something that will work.

            323GTX,

I've owned a Maxim now for about 3 years.
Not long ago, I added an audio extension cable from my fairing to my right saddlebag, where I mounted an amp/splitter. I'd plug the front end into my
Mp3 / cell phone, and then I could plug 2 sets of earbuds into the amp... enabling my passenger to also enjoy tunes.

To do this, I had to pull the tank & seat... no biggie.
But, I guess I disturbed the position of the wiring harness that runs from the alternator to the reg/rec... and when I bolted the tank back down, it shorted those wires... smashed them flat! Fried my reg / rec, and had to replace it.

It not only melted that connector up by the reg, but also the other white connector previously mentioned, back side of the battery area, and I had to replace that one as well.

Luckily, the alternator was not harmed.

So you might check for that.

I've heard Yamaha recommended brush changes at 20,000 mile intervals, but I've put way more miles on mine than that, and still ok.

Since I have a Vetter 4 on my Maxim, I wired and added a voltmeter to the lower left side of the fairing, below the pocket. Worked great, and is a handy guage to add.

Just one of my self-induced problems solved...

Now I check ALL wires as the tank goes back on!

The brushes are basically just a machined piece of carbon, right? I understand the concept of what the brushes do, just never have needed to replace them on any of my electric power tools yet.

Boats.net has the XJ brushes for ~$40/ea.. I paid ~$40 for a used XS crankshaft

Hard to believe so much money for a hunk of carbon..

I found this website that carries brushes for $24 for the PAIR for the XS and XJ:

                http://www.cyclewareables.com/pages/...or_brushes.htm

Took a minute for me to find that they are sold in sets. It isn't exactly an easy to browse website:

Even better, found the source thanks to the name in the photo:

                $19.95

Well, definitely not for the XS, it has a brush-less system.

Partsnmore.com used to sell them for a decent price, but they've revamped their site, and I've searched and can't find them in their listings for the XJ11 parts...so not sure if they quit carrying them??

I just checked BikeBandit, and I can't believe they are wanting $60.00 a PIECE !?
