  • XJ11 - Best way to remove the rear MC/proportioning valve

    Need to do this ASAP. Would like to hear from someone who has done this with the XJ11 & might could save me doing some unnecessary steps while I'm wrenching & reinventing the wheel.

    Are you just trying to take it out to service it?

    I leave it connected to the bike, and loosen the bolts that hold the front/rear hoses to it. It is tricky to get a wrench in there, but possible. Then, remove the 2 bolts that hold the MC to the frame. I then push the inner fender out of the way (toward the rear wheel) and reach my arm in between the inner fender and the frame. You can then use your fingers to disconnect the brake lines and extract the MC from the frame.

      Hi, I'm replacing the brake lines and want to clean the MC out while I'm doing that. I need to first get the lines out to have them measured & then have SS braid replacements made locally.

        Sounds good. Process is the same. You can get pre-made lines in black, blue, silver or red from Chacal if you want, and there is absolutely no risk of them not fitting. Link is in my signature. Good luck either way.

          Pay close attention to the way the valve comes apart if you intend to disassemble the proportioning valve. It's one of those parts the manual says is not a serviceable part and not to disassemble. If I had read that before taking it apart, I would have paid closer attention to how it came apart. As we all know this doesn't mean it isn't really serviceable, but will probably be a pain in the a$$ somehow.

          If just cleaning or rebuilding the rear MC, I would avoid disassembling the proportioning valve if possible.

          There is a picture in the manual that shows kind of a cutaway drawing for how it works that you can hunt for that helped me get it back together correctly.

          This bike sat for 20+ years and sometime in the last five years the brake lines were damaged exposing the fluid to air, so had lots of gunk to clean out.


          Edit: just re-read you're just doing brake lines

            I'll leave the proportioning valve alone, I'm not into looking for problems I don't need to fix; I got enough of them going on already...
