  • First Gear Slipping

My son just got his first XS this past week end. The problem he is having is the first gear slips out if he/me (mostly me) gets on the throttle. It works fine if he takes off at a gentle pace so after this riding season we will be pulling the motor and replacing that.

My question is will the gears from an E fit in the SH?

I have the engine from my E that I melted the #2 piston and would like to pull the gears out of it to repair his engine. If not I will need to repair the current gears or fine a replacement.

    Thanks for any input.

Unless you have your heart set on pulling the motor you might want to do a search around on "tranny fixes". There are more than a few here who have just flipped the bike over and done the work that way. One member hoisted the bike to vertical and did the repairs. DiverRay took another tranny apart and did the work on the gears and then replaced everything at once.

If I remember right 78-82, all of the gear part numbers are the same. I am no help on the great white north bikes.

All of the XS and the XJ11 engines used the exact same gears in the tranny. They are completely interchangable regardless of year or model.

As Stated, no need to pull the engine. I have done the repair with the bike on the centerstand every time.

Thanks guys. It's good to know that the engine parts interchange. I have read the post on tranny fixes and plan on following the procedures when the time is right. Thanks

I believe the theory is that it has to do with the internal gear for the kick start not being there. It removed some of the support for the cluster allowing a little more movement that causes 1st to go faster than 2nd does. That's really the only difference between them, and the 81 engines were the first ones (and maybe some late 80's to have that gear not included, which is why many with 80 model bikes can easily add the parts that go on the clutch side of the system and have a kick start, but others have to split the cases to add one.

The 81 XS also had 2nd gear issues, it was only the XJ that consistently had1st gear issues.

80 Models did not get the kickstart.

                  gears

My second gear was toast when I bought the bike, then slowly first gear started to skip a beat before engaging. Good thing I had a second transmission handy.

Mine was 3rd gear... Then second, then 1st... That's 3 separate dremel fixes on the same transmission... Gave me lots of experience with the process, that's for sure!

While 80 models didn't get the kickstart, they did have the gears that have to go in and out from the transmission side that are said to require splitting the cases to remove or insert, where the 81 and later engines don't have those gears (my 81H engine doesn't have them, my 80G engine does, I don't know about my 80SG engine). I haven't looked far enough into my 81H engine, but since it's got replacement cases on it, it may well have backcut gears too, it sure does seem to suck the gears in on shifts unlike my 80 engine. If I catch it just right I can be stupid and get it to pop out, but generally if it catches at all it's in. Now it it's just didn't have that top end knock, although it's so much less noticeable after adjusting the timing so I don't get any pinging on hard acceleration. And it's only on mild to moderate acceleration, so maybe it IS the sound in the TSB . It's not changed a bit in almost 15,000 miles and getting close to 2 years now, so I'm getting less and less worried about it, especially with a spare sitting over in the corner.
