My 1980 Special has had the left side cover locked drilled out and a bolt run through it to hold on a broken side plate. I am restoring the bike to as close as stock as possible and only a few details to work out. I need a new lock but have found limited information on them. Are they the same part for all XS1100's or are they model and year specific. If so, which ones fit my 1980 Special?

The sidecover locks are all the same, with one minor change; the '78-79 locks are painted black, the later ones aren't painted.
If you actually want to work it with the key, it gets more complicated. Not all keys will fit in all lock tumblers, although the tumblers will interchange. If you don't want to (or can't) key it to the rest of the bike, you can remove the key tumblers and any key that will fit the slot will open it.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Side cover lock only uses two tumblers, IIRC. As long as the key will fit, it does NOT take much! You can get the locks on e-bay, and probably from a wrecking yard if there is one near you.Ray Matteis

There's a little trick to getting these locks to run with any key. Remove the lock mechanism from the main body of the side panel lock. The very last brass 'tumbler' should be pressed in with a pointed object and the lock mechanism barrel comes out. You'll see several brass 'tumblers' (more like brass tangs). Put your key into the lock mechanism and you'll see that, because it's not the correct key, some of the brass tangs protrude and this is what stops the key from turning and opening the lock. You can either take all the tangs out and rearrange them to get as many as possible to be flush when your key is in there, then file the others down so they're flush. Or you can forget the rearranging bit and just file down any protruding tangs.
The above allows your key to work in the lock but lowers its security (effectively, you are negating the effect of the tangs you file down) but.... you're not keeping the Crown Jewels under your side panel , so it hardly matters.XS1100F 1980 European model. Because that is where the tool box is and how you remove the battery. My guess is its another case of locks are made to keep honest people honest. It also serves as just enough of a deterant that perhaps the thief looking for a battery will mosey on down thw street to the hardley or Zuki or whatever else there is instead fo your bike. Might not work, but worth a try.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

I can't help thinking it's a feature like the 'power socket' under the other panel, billed here in the UK as a 'shaver socket' in the blurb of the time.... more of a little gimmick than a feature to be taken seriously. Having said that, have you ever tried to force a side panel off? I have, on one of the donor bikes I had which had a cracked panel, and it's not as easy as one would think! It might buy 60 seconds for a battery thief to be spotted and buying a little time is what all locks are about. In fact, that makes me want to start a new thread re lock picking and the false sense of security that many locks give us.....
