  • What are these parts worth?

I'm selling the tank off my 79 Special parts bike as well as the Vetter hard bags and trunk (just like the ones on the white bike of "skids") but I don't have a clue to their $worth. I want to be fair to myself and the buyers on this stuff so does anyone know what I should ask for these parts? The tank is in great overall condition (locking cap w/key, petcocks) but of course needs paint and emblems. The bags are still mounted and the hardware is intact. The bags are in pretty good shape for being 24 years old. Anybody shed some light here?
    Thanks!

They are worth as much as someone is willing to pay for them. But, usually on ebay, if in decent condition...

The tank with matching key would prolly go for around $60-120 depending on how many people wanted it at the time. The hard bags are usually in demand, you'd probably be able to get $50-100 for them easily.

You might try ebay and search on closed auctions. That will give you some idea of past prices.

Shipping costs add a lot to the purchase price. if you are in a large metro area where someone can pick them up you will get a better price.

Other things that will affect price are color and overall condition. For example, do all the lights in the trunk work, and do you have the original 'pigtail' used to wire them into the bike harness? Do you have keys for all items? People will want to know the details. I was told White was the least favorite color, which is what I bought, but later switched the doors to another color.

I bought my bags, mounts, and trunk as a set in 2000, paid $75.00 for all but shipping cost me another $60.00 or so. Bag mounts were from a Standard and had to be modified to fit the XJ. (All 3 models, Standard, Special, and XJ use a different rear footpeg bracket that the bag mounts use. Swapping between models requires some modification of the bag mounts.) I would say the system was in good condition.

Finally, timing may be a factor. This time of year a lot of people are putting their bikes away for the winter. Some are looking for winter projects, but demand may be less now than in the spring when thoughts may be turning to summer trips.

In other words, it is worth what people are willing to pay. You will be asked if you will sell the trunk and bags separately. They were sold as spearate itmes, and many who bought the bags may want to add just the trunk. My total investment was right around $150.00, which I thought was reasonable 3 years ago.

Dave, I paid $350 for a complete touring package.
That included, full faring with lowers, hard bags, large trunk and a
removable/adjustable driver backrest. Of course, this had all necessary harware and brackets.
The shipping accross the States was quite pricey tho.
I sold a good gas tank for a Standard to someone here on the list for $70, plus shipping.
        Hope this helps

That soundds about right. My Vetter, mount, and lowers cost about $150.00, so total package with trunk and bags came in at about $300.00 with shipping. Lowers are gray and Vetter is black, so not a fully matched set.

I don't use the trunk as I found the bare luggage rack to be more versitile. (Picture shows my soft-side cooler on the rack) I fill the cooler with ice for beverages on long trips. (Just Gatoraid, PowerAide, or water.)

          Bags originally had white lids:

I eventualy swapped out the standard luggage rack from one off a CB 650, which had the adjustable backrest shown in the top photo. Junkyard buy for $5.00 as one of the mounting bars was broken, but I was going to cut the original bars anyway.

          Just rambling.....
