Hey guys,
Just bought a used 1980 Special and have it purring like a kitten. It was originally equipped with a Vetter fairing which I did not care for. I took off the fairing before the bike even ran with the intent of putting on a stock headlamp. I have the headlamp installed but am having an electrical problem. When the ignition is turned on, I have all lights, starter, horn but no headlamp or gauge lights. When the light switch is in "low" and the headlamp circuit is jumped with a hot wire, the headlamp turns on until the hot wire is removed. When the light switch is manually turned to "high" and the circuit is jumped with the hot wire, the headlamp and the gauge lights go on and stay on even after the hot wire is removed. Also, as the lights go on in "high" I hear a distinct "click". The relay?? In "high" all of the lights stay on even when the hot wire is removed. But, after I turn off the ignition and turn it back on, the headlamp and gauge lights are once again nonfunctional. Do I have a headlamp relay problem? Or do you have any other ideas. If it is the relay, where is it and what does it look like?
