valve shim question

So, I getting ready to do the first service after my rebuild, I have at least I valve that's making a lot of noise, obviously gonna need a taller shim. Tallest I have is in, 295 IIRC, local Yamaha shop says 'no longer available'

I remember seeing it posted here that the same shims are used in automotive application's, but can't recall which, can anyone help?

Go to a shop that REALLY has interest in what they do and what they know..........obvious where you went could care less and are clueless anyways. You'd think with the poor economy these places would pull there head out....duh. Kaw. and a few others use the same 29mm shims.......very common and most shops have a few buckets of different MM shims for the different applications. Those that don't aren't real working shops anyways.......just gettin' by type. Remember, there are dealers and stealers..... their shop, abilities and work ethics can tell you alot about their work........remember, feast your eyes whenever possible to the shop area.......that will be a good indication of there credibility.

The late 70's Kawasaki KZ's use 29mm shims as do the BMW's and the Ford Taurus.

Let me know what size shim you need, if I have it, I'll mail it to you.

It is the ford SHO engines that used the same shims, but they are hard to find as well, and expensive. Motoman is right in all that he says, find the shop that knows what they are talking about. It is the same in the automotive parts houses, if the computer says it isn't available, then they can't get it, but anyone that knows anything will usually know that other vehicles use the same thing. Was in the buisiness for 25 years, and have seen a lot of parts guys that almost know what a spark plug is.

If your running a 295 shim and it is loose, not tight, but loose, then I would say you have a stuck valve or something. That is a very thick shim for these engines. I would be very surprised if you need a thicker shim, or if they make one.

Your shims will go down in size over time, not up.

Forgot to mention that when I did the rebuild, I also had new SS valves put in, which obviously means a valve job....
I noticed the NOISY valve since the first time I started the motor,
yes I know the valve train on theses motors is a bit noisy, but THIS is excessive....
I havent pulled the valve cover yet, but cant imagine finding one that is too tight making this much noise, never know.....

When I redid the valves on Succubus, one of my Fs, I needed a 315 to get the valve gap right. A local shop that handles several brands of motorcycles traded me even up for a 275 I had. So they do come thicker, and shops that want business often do not you charge if you have an exchange.

The shop I traded with, BTW, is known locally for not being the most responsive place in town, so if they would make the swap I would think almost any decent dealers would.
