  • Left Handlebar switch 79SF

    1979 XS1100 SF Original

Symptoms – Left signal works fine, Right is dead silence, no clicks no lights. Left side goes on, off, and clears with a forward horizontal push of the lever as it should. Indicator light between the Speedo and Tach works with the Left only.

I have been through all the harness connectors and cleaned them prior to startup, harness and the connectors are in good shape. I am 100% sure that the grounding is as good as she is going to be in her unmolested condition.

I am rebuilding the turn signal switch, it has been partially disassembled and cleaned with contact cleaner and polishing. The direction lever is clean, the copper tangs cleaned and polished a bit, horn button works, dielectric added back for lubrication and preservation. I did not remove the three wire directional connector of the Chocolate-Brown/White-Dark Green, this is a tough one and seems it would be easy to break the solder connections.

I tested ohms on the Dark Green from the headlight to the tail light, it is good. Also tested from the harness Male plug (where handlebar switch pigtail attaches) to front and then rear signal connectors, tests good. Tested the switch pigtail from the plug end to the three wire directional connector (inside of the switch) of the Chocolate-Brown/White-Dark Green, good ohms on each wire. Tested at the connector on the three wire directional (Chocolate-Brown/White-Dark Green), testing Choc to Brw/Wht with the white plastic switch in this position, Ohms good. Same for the Brw/Wht to Dark Green with switch in opposite position. This indicates that the copper connectors on the back of the black three wire connector are good along with the small copper contactor on the white plastic slider block. I would love to take this part out and clean/polish it, but these three wires are butt soldered into place and seem to be a bugger to repair.

I have tested the blinkers on the right by crossing the Chocolate into them and each light works as it should, so the fixtures, bulbs, and ground are good.

I think the next thing to do is to pull out the three wire connector I have been avoiding and clean-polish it, and take my chances on the connections breaking. I welcome any of your constructive thoughts.

If I do break any of these butt solder connections I plan to use a rosin-core solder and preface any soldiering effort with a trip to the Priest and confession.

For what it's worth, my high/low beam slider switch broke off my 80SG, so I went to Mike's XS and bought a left side swtich cluster and took the parts from that to replace them in my broken left side. It's not the exact switch assembly, as the replacement from Mike's doesn't have the emergency flasher on it, but the rest of it looked identical to my 80SG in terms of the hard parts (other than the wiring, but that isn't what I go it for, so it didn't matter). I think it was $50 or so a couple years ago and now I have parts to fix other stuff if it goes wrong. Just go to Mike'sXS website and look around, you'll find it.

BTW, ZRX carbs have the same spacing as the XS11... http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35462

Got it, it was the 3-wire connection, dirty-corrosion-grime. It really pays off to clean all the electrical connections.

I am happy and idling at 800RPM.
