  • Buying an 82 XJ1100, have some questions.

Monday I will be taking my 82 XJ1100 home. The bike is pretty much complete minus carbs and the right side engine cover. It only has 10,000 miles and it hasnt been ridden since '86. The best thing is that it only is going to cost me $50. It will be coming with a spare engine, front & back wheels and other parts. The question that I have is, Is there something that is supposed to go under the right engine cover? All that I see is a the crankshaft. There doesnt appear to be any sort of key or threading on the shaft but I am still curious. Am going to determine which engine is in better shape and then I am going to hop up the other.

    Hey there Fox,

Well, just like the XS, the right side of the engine on the crankshaft is where they mounted the alternator/stator assembly, so hopefully your parts bike has one in working order!
Not running since '86, and no carbs on it, it may be quite rusty internally inside the cylinders, and the partzer might not be much better!? Good luck, hope you have one engine in decent shape. You'll still need to do a lot of work on every other system to get it into proper "SAFE" working order. You'll want to browse thru the tech tips on what to look for in an old bike, and things to work/check on, ie. brakes, tires, electrical, fuel both tank and carbs, etc!! Have fun, your winter should go by pretty quickly!!

The bike has been inside since 86 and is mainly covered with dust so rust wont be a problem. The previous owner sprayed some gas in the cyls and it ran momentarily so it should be in working order. The spare engine looks complete so it should have the alternator.

        XJ alternator

John, I happen to have a couple of XJ alternators if you should happen to need one. I put an XJ engine in my 80 SG, but retained the XS alternator.

How much would you ask for one of the alternators? Do you also have the cover? Havent looked at the spare engine yet so I dont know if I need one but its nice to know.

            Alternator

John, I'll take $50 plus shipping for the alternator, and I see you need a set of carbs, is that right? I just so happen to have a set that has been sitting for a while, but they haven't been opened or tampered with. I'll let them go for $75. Do you need the intake boots as well? Got a set of those also. I have an ad in parts for sale here at XS11.com. It's in the listing for XJ parts for sale. I also have an ad for a 78 Standard listed here also. send me an e mail. my addy is: wknj@hotmail.com
