  • Pick-up coil re-wire help

Chasing down my spark issues has led me to review my pick-up set-up. My wires are faded and have suffered repairs by lame electricians. Let me make sure:
The forward pick-up has a salmon wire and a bluish wire. The rear pick-up has a buff/tan wire and a bluish wire. How can I tell which bluish wire goes to which, and does it matter?

Of course it matters! Each pickup has one pair of wires. You don't have your model in your signature so it's impossible to tell you which wire leads go to which pins on the TCI. The early ones are paired top set of pins and bottom set of pins...later ones...someone else might know? I only know they're different early - to - later.

    Here's the early diagram:

        Here's the early diagram:

According to his profile his is an 80G. That would put it in the later category. I'm not sure what I can do as far as helping there? His is at least the same model as mine. Actually, isn't the 80 TCI the same as the 79 and 78 TCI? It's the 81 that's the first one that different.

CJ, if it matters so much, why are they the same color?

            Hey Cy and Loho,

Yes, the 78-80 TCI's are the same, the 81 was different as was the 82XJ.

I would suggest following Davinci/Randy's diagram, pull the seat, pull the plug at the TCI, check both the colors, and verify which wire is what with a continuity/resistance test from the plug at the TCI to the Pu coils, and that way you can tell which wires should be paired together, and whether they should be on left side or right side of PU plate!

None of the wires make it back to the TCI as the same color. The colors listed on the wiring diagram are not even close...two yellows and red/white green/white.

Right. The color change happens inside the harness, near the neutral switch. As TC wrote, you'll need to test from the pickups to the TCI to confirm which are which.

OR, you could cut open the harness.

Would it make any difference? If you got them reversed, couldn't you swap the feed wires to the coils, and get the right timing? As long as the pickup coils were exactly 180 deg apart, the timing wouldn't be affected. JAT CZ

Yes, that is correct. It's exactly what happened to me and how I fixed it. Don't know how I got them reversed, but I did, and that is how I fixed it, I swapped the primary wires at the coils and the backfiring stopped and it started the first time I pushed the starter button (I was convinced by that point it wouldn't work but was told to try it and did what I was told, glad I did).
