there appears to be a caps over my mixture screws and only one turns at the moment.... sprayed wd40....

I bought a rebuild kit....im going to use the needle valves and seats and the maybe the new pilot jets. the book shows "pilot jet plugs" i didnt see any. I hear some have em some dont????

the rebuild kit has a 1/4 thick washer with a tiny hole drilled through center and i dont know where it goes yet.

if anyone might be willing to help me get through this rebuild I would greatly appreciate it thx.

Hi Steve and welcome,
'80 is a transition year; posts say that early '80s have 137 main jets that also feed the pilot jets through a small diameter slanted hole in the carb body so the pilot jet insertion hole is plugged.
Late '80s have 110 main jets, no slanted hole and the pilot jet sucks from the carb bowl.
The fat washer is a replacement for the EPA mandated plug that masks off the idle jet needle so you can't mess with it.

on the outlet side of the carb is what I call the mixture screw that is used for color tuning or getting the mixture correct. the book calls it the pilot screw. is that what you are calling the idle jet needle? is this where the fat washer goes and why would i want to block that off? Yes, all the same. That disc is supposed to be covering the mixing screw so owners cannot mess with the mixture. Once you take it off, there is no reason to put them back on, but you are supposed to!

Yes, many kits come with them cause some owners who are doing a really quality restore want to put that back in after then get it tuned so that it looks just like new. Those can be ordered by themselves from MikesXS as well, just like the dealer used to be able to order them for doing tuneups so they could drill them out and then replace them. One advantage of putting them back in, is it keeps crud out of the towers and keeps the screws from getting locked up from the crud getting in there. I've thought about putting them back in, or getting some rubber plugs to put in there just to keep things clean in there, I don't like dirt and stuff getting down in there.

Hey there "G",

I edited your post, see the photos! In your first photo, it looks like most off the PLUG is still there, they drill a small hole in the middle of it, but didn't actually remove the plug. I've used a tight fitting sheet metal screw to turn into the plug and then a pair of pliers to pull the screw and plug out after tilting it a bit to break it loose! If you have a small screwdriver that would fit into that hole, it might work also, but could bent the driver?? You'll need to remove the PILOT SCREWS from those holes for proper cleaning as well as being able to TUNE The idle circuit, be careful, little rubber and metal washers on the ends of the screws IF they don't get stuck down there!

BTW, those carbs look pretty clean, on the OUTSIDE anyways!
