    Dumbest question ever.

    Stuck side cover, left side. Sprayed some PB blaster in there to try and loosten it up, but it just won't budge. I'm afraid if I use a tool and force it, it'll break.

    It's the original on a 79, both are in great shape, and I'd be so pissed at myself if I messed it up. It's about the only cherry thing on this bike.

    Any tips? TIA, dudes...

    You know that you need to use the key to unlatch it. there is a key hole pointing forward with a little black cover over it.

      Well I'll be damned...

      Boy, that was embarrassing... Never had an XS with a fully functional left side cover!

        Don't be embarrassed. I didn't know about that for over 6 months cause mine was broken, and then it still didn't matter cause it was broken. Then someone posted a way to fix it, and now it's not broken, and I get to use the key to take it off.

          Well thanks... Yeah, I suppose the reason I didn't know either is because mine never worked! I used a discretely placed bungee cord to keep it on.

            That's how mine was. Then someone posted how you can use superglue and baking soda to build the piece back up and then file, sand and grind it back down into shape and it's as good as new. So now it's just like it had never been broken. I would guess if I would have had the piece I could have glued it back on, but I don't know. But the building it back up, you can hardly tell the repair from the original after painting. I was skeptical but figured I had nothing to lose, and it worked perfectly the first time. It won't replace the entire tab, but if the end is all that is gone, you can build that back up and then shape it and your good.

              Yup

              I used my key to remove the broken piece after I ripped it off...
              When the horse is dead, dismount.

                How did you fix it mine is missing what is in the center little sq. hole, no attachment on cover ,its missing or holding all together now with plastic tie, be neet to have photos of it complete to thanks .

                  Can you post a picture of what you have left on yours? If there is enough I can take a picture of mine all fixed so you can see how you shape it to get it working. It does take some trial and error to get it working but it's just a matter of a little sanding and then test fitting and then more sanding etc.

                      Ok

                      So you found the key lock for the side/tool box cover. Now while in the search mode, walk around to the other side of the bike and look for the kick start lever. It's under a big black wing nut under the left corner of the right side cover. That too is handy to know.

                        Hi Kris,
                        what's really embarrassing is asking after you took the prybar to it.
                        BTW, the key only goes in part way and the lock will most likely need a good dose of penetrating oil to free it up.
