  • Frame question

    Looking to buy a 81 frame on ebay.....what are the differences between a special and a standard? I need a frame for my 81 sx 1100 sh.
    At this time:
    1985 Goldwing Innr.
    1976 cb 750 cafe racer
    2007 vtx 1300
    81 sx 1100 s h
    81 sx 400 special

    Hi brcree,
    I understand that there are differences but there's enough Frankenbikes on this list to show that the differences can be gotten around.
    The really important thing is that your replacement frame comes with a clear title.

      I found the thread with ser.#s.....and found the ebay frame will work!
      At this time:
      1985 Goldwing Innr.
      1976 cb 750 cafe racer
      2007 vtx 1300
      81 sx 1100 s h
      81 sx 400 special

        The '78-80 frames are quite a bit different between the specials and standards, enough to where you wouldn't want to try to make it work (BTDT...). The '81 frames though are pretty similar, with the only major differences being the sidecover mounts and the rear fender mount. The special frame won't accept the standard rear fender or sidecovers as-is, and vice-versa. If you're willing to do a bit of cutting/welding, these can be swapped.
