I understand that there are differences but there's enough Frankenbikes on this list to show that the differences can be gotten around.

The '78-80 frames are quite a bit different between the specials and standards, enough to where you wouldn't want to try to make it work (BTDT...). The '81 frames though are pretty similar, with the only major differences being the sidecover mounts and the rear fender mount. The special frame won't accept the standard rear fender or sidecovers as-is, and vice-versa. If you're willing to do a bit of cutting/welding, these can be swapped.Fast, Cheap, Reliable...
