80 mns rebuild

I am restoring my 80 mns it has 13500mi. and all original parts I am going to repaint ,black chrome and whatever else it takes to restore to original. my question is the rear shocks which are rusted but are still fully functional I want to rechrome the spring and repaint the outside of the shock is there any way to seperate the spring from the shock so I can get to the shock itself and redo not sure if spring comes off without removing the two adjustment tabs at bottom of spring which must be pressed in or welded some how any ideas?

You compress the spring and take the 'keeper" out of the top of the shock.
