    oil light

does any one know where the oil pressure sending unit is? Went for a ride got about a block and oil light came on turned around came back home. Engine doesn't seem to be knocking but did not run it too long, just finished doing a valve adjustment to it seemed to running good until i went for very short ride.

    Hope my engine isn't screwed.

    Hey there,

I guess you may not have downloaded any manuals from Catatonic Bug's profile links yet??

The sender unit is directly below the carbs on the engine/case, with 1 wire going to it. That wire can get frayed, and if any exposed wire touches the frame/case, the light will come on. Also, the light can be an indication that you have a tail/brake light out as well. The wire is just the ground that completes the circuit.

Also the sending unit can sometimes/rarely gets stuck shut, and can be removed and cleaned out with carb cleaner or such and a stick to push in on the plunger to move it against the spring while cleaning/spritzing.

i have the clymer manual but could not find anything on the sending unit and tried looking through the one i downloaded off c-bugs site. I never even thought to check the tail light will run right out to the garage and check now, because it came on suddenly while i was slowing down for a light so maybe tail light may have burned out.

went out side and checked the tail light and sure enough it was burned out. If it wasn't for this site i would have spent hours diagnosing that oil light problem. thanks a bunch top cat.

yeah i was worried i had screwed my motor some how thought maybe i got something in the crankcase somehow or i had cut the oil sending unit wire some how. I was really upset started looking through the manual couldn't find anything on the sending unit. Replaced the tail light started all is good now no oil light. Yaaaahhhh!!!!!

Since my wife blew up the motor on her VMax a few years ago I've been a nut about oil pressure. I put the sending unit on a t-fitting and piped a gauge off the right side of the bike. If I ever have a question all I do is look down.
