What is this nipple?

There's a little pipe nipple coming off of the back of my gas tank below where the seat sits. What is it for/where does it go?

On my '79 Standard that's the tank overflow. The other end of it is next to the filler cap, under the chrome trim. If you overfill or splash gas in that recessed area, it drains out instead of pooling around the filler neck. There should be a rubber tube connected to the nipple to direct the overflow to the ground and keep it off the bike.

The extra nipple is called a "nubbin." I learned that from the tv show, Friends. :-)

So the little nipple on your tank may be called a nubbin, but that is a generic description of a protruding part.

It should be a overflow run-off. Not just for extra gas, but more commonly for rainwater.
