I was wondering if someone in here has ever run across this problem. I have no lights. The headlight (high or low) and running lights do not work. The headlight indicator on the cluster also does not work. The signals, horn, and brake lights work. I tested the headlight bulb on a battery and it lights. The bike is a 1980 xs1100LG Any help with this would be apperciated.

pay special attention to the fuse holders..with age thay can get very brittle, they seem to hold the fuse in place but may not make a connection..
I had the same thing happen to me..riding along and I notice that my headlight is out..I found it very odd becaude I had just replaced it..well troubleshot a bit and found the old fuse holder at fault..
I'd replace the fuse panel..give the bike updated protection and more reliable connections.'80 XS1100sg "MadMax"

Hey there PowerGlide,
You've got an 80LG(MidnightSpecial), and it should have the reserve lighting system. If yours is messed up, it could be contributing to this problem. There is a tech tip about how to remove and bypass this system.
Also, you say running lights, I'm assuming you mean the tail lights? The tail lights should come on once you turn the key on even before the engine is started. There is also a link to a PDF file of the owner's manual for a 81H/SH complete with wiring diagram, so you might want to D/L it and check it out. It's a little over 6MB is size, but viewable and scalable in Adobe Acrobat Reader! The Turn signals are only turn signals and do not light until used, they are not dual running lights, just FYI.
