Are standard and special handle bars the same?
If not what are the differences?

I only have the Special, but I believe there is a lot more pullback and more of a "buckhorn" effect to the Special bars.

I am not familiar with the buckhorn effect. Does it put your wrist in a different angle. I think i'm a more comfortable with the almost straight bar or cafe/european style, that's what i'm looking for.

You would NOT like the Special bars then. There's so much pullback it's almost like the handles of a wheel barrow. Matter of fact, I just too my Special bars off tonight and put superbike bars on it. Only problem is all my cables are too long right now.

Standard bars rise up and pull back at about 45 degrees. I hate them as they caused pain in my wrists. My daughter likes them, so I put them on her XS650. She doesn't like the Special bars. I put Special bars on my bike. It was easy as it IS a Special and was equipped with the long cables. I find them comfortable.

The point is, it's probably not a good idea to ask someone else what kind of handlebars to put on your bike. Use whatever works for YOU.

You having an '81h will have specially bars altogether. they will be similar to the standard bars but a bit taller to clear the extra large tank.
