Just installed a used speedometer on my XS11H, speed indicator is reacting sluggishly, travelled 4 miles with it before rain forced me home. Is this normal if it was sitting a while? Does it need a break in period to loosen up . I did spray a little silicone into it.
    BAMN!

If it is slugish then something is gummed up. You may need to take the back cover off and clean/lube the insides as best that you can. The cable should also be lubed.

This is my second speedo exchange same results although this one is a little more responsive. What am I doing wrong
      The back cover or casing?
Should I remove the 2 screws on either side of the speedo connector?

Unfortunately, the gauges on these are 'sealed' units; they're not designed to be taken apart. Some owners have carefully pried the black trim away from the case and gotten them apart for repairs/lubing, but reinstalling the trim and getting it re-crimped to the case usually leaves marks. They generally never look the same after these home repairs.

There are companies out there who have the tools/expertise to rebuild these to like-new condition, but they're not cheap...

Mine did the same thing when I first got it on the road. It would stay at 30 while stopped at a light, slowly returning to 0. Couple hundred miles later it's working great. I wouldn't do anything yet, give it a chance to free up.

I wish I knew that before I bought a second one . The first one I ran 80 miles before giving up on it. Will re-install and give it a couple hundred.

              Hi Nubian,
that speedo was meant to last ~5 years so it's a quarter-century past it's best-before date. Hopefully the silicone spray will soften the dried up lubricant.
BTW, besides the sluggish needle, did the odometer reading increase by 4 miles on the 4 mile ride?

Yes it did, the whole 80 miles registered.
