  • Horizontal rack?

    Hello,

I just acquired my first XS1100--a 1979 Special with King and Queen seat. I'd like to carry luggage on the back of the bike, and can use the (vertical) back of the seat to secure items, but I would like to find and attach a secure horizontal rack so items don't rest on the rear fender or brake light.

    My questions are:

What are my options of what to install?

What are my options of where to get them?

Thanks in advance for your help and patience.

That's a really common accessory, but they don't make them anymore. Keep your eyes peeled on ebay or the for-sale section of this forum. They pop up now and then. They bolt to the accessory holes just behind the rear turn signals, and to the top bolts on the rear shocks. Of course, if you are handy with a welder, you can always make one yourself!

      Hello CatonicBug,

May I ask what it is called so I know what to search for?

Thank you for your fast reply!

The only ones I've seen also hold bags on the sides. Do they make just a trunk rack?

The only racks I've ever seen only hold a trunk or luggage. The saddlebags are held on by separate brackets.

          Here's one example:

          And still another:

My saddlebag brackets did both, but the rack was more flimsy than I was happy with. Now with the OEM luggage rack (to the OP this is what your looking for) it's a LOT more sturdy and I'm much happier with it.

When looking on ebay or craigslist, you want to look for a luggage rack for and XS1100. But make sure that it's for the right model (special or standard, the mounting points are different for the two). If you want hard bags and a trunk, you could try to find a complete vetter bag and trunk setup, but they are hard to find, and I wasn't very happy with the luggage rack part of the frame for it, so I'm not using that part anymore even though I have the trunk, it's mounted to the OEM luggage rack I just got.

I did the same thing. The Vetter rack was more of an extension of the saddlebag brackets though. I have the same rack as the second picture above, and the Vetter trunk mounted to it. Then, the Vetter saddlebag brackets mounted separately.

Heres a picture of my trunk on an OEM Yamaha Luggage Rack Only. The bags are mounted on separate brackets.

Thanks for bearing with me, everybody. I will check on Ebay, and post any links I find to verify with you experts that I'm bidding on the right thing. Also, I will post it on the wanted forum here at XS.com.

                        Potential Rack on Ebay

                        Hey--

Anybody know if this will fit my bike if I remove the backrest? And if so, if $40 is on the high side? Also, are there other makes--like the XS850--that have the same mounting parameters, so I could search for this as well?

I don't think it will. Pretty sure the '79 special has different mounts than the '78. Could be wrong.

One reason the Special hard luggage is so expensive - its kinda rare too.

Ok, I aiming for the slim chance that the ebay guy was wrong, and that you all could verify that it is in fact for a Special (or at least that it could work). Pipe dreams...
