  • Stuck bolt

    Hi folks. All i'm trying to do is an oil change and my bike is not agreeing with me. I'm trying to take the oil filter cover off but the bolt head is starting to turn round because its refusing to budge. Can anyone help me out here. Its a 12mm bolt on the bottom of the oil filter cover. I gave up for now because I don't feel like snapping the head off. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

    6-point socket and not a 12-point. hope you started w/ the 6

        I actually did start with a 12 point unfortunately. I'm going to borrow some tools and hopefully I can achieve something. Hopefully the torch works

          Yah, as I said on the referenced thread, some people just gotta bubba them oil filter bolts!

          When you do get the thing off, (and you will!), replace it with a new or good used one, or have someone weld a new bolt head on. I found a good used one for a couple of bucks.

          Be sure to replace both o-rings, and use a new squash washer on the drain plug too!

          Check for the presence of that flat washer which prevents the spring which holds the filter up in the housing from pushing through the rubber center of the filter. It was absent on mine, so the filter wasn't doing a whole lot of filtering.

          Clean the filter housing where the bolt o-ring seats, so it will make a good seal. Only tighten the assembly enough so the o-ring on the filter housing flattens out, and the metal edge contacts the surface of the oil pan.

          Don't forget to check your middle and rear gear oil...

            But when you do these make sure you can get the filler plug out FIRST before you drain the old oil.

              Sometimes a stuck bolt will respond to being tightened a little bit before being loosened. Heating the area around the bolt with a torch and then holding an ice cube on the bolt head can bust it loose.

              Lots of penetrating spray, heat and cooling cycles, and patience are yer best friends. You can hammer a 6 point socket on the bolt with a strip of beer can inside as a shim. Then hit the wrench handle with a hammer instead of pushing. This will work like an impact driver.

              Speaking of impact driver, a cheap hammer type impact driver is awesome for removing stuck bolts. If you can get the front of yer bike off the ground, you can use one and the job will be done. They are less than $20 and if ya don't have a pneumatic one, you should have a hammer type.

                There is almost no room in there, but you can try to put a strap wrench around the cup. It will move just a little bit one direction or the other before the locating tab interferes with movement. It might help bust the bolt free, especially if you can assist with a wrench on the bolt head.

                  Air impact wrench & proper 6-point air impact socket.
                  The middle drive & final drive filler plugs are also a swine to remove because the stylists triumphed over the engineers and put Allen sockets in them and the sockets crater out because you can't push straight down on them.
                  Once you get them out (filing two flats on the flange and using an open end wrench works good) braze 11mm a/f nuts on top or replace them with extra drain plugs.

                    Crud, if we would of thought of it I have one that's in decent shape that you could have had when you picked up the oil filter. I've had one very very nearly strip off on me, and it's sitting in a box now (the pretty much stripped one, not the good one).

                      Got a hold of a 6 pt socket that fits right. Only lubricant I have is silicon lubricant do its sitting on there and hopefully will assist me later with the bolt removal. Wish me luck

                        I generally use a good 6 point socket and an air impact wrench. If you can't get it to move, I believe my Sat is clear next weekend and I have two impact wrenches and a compressor and the right size socket (actually 3 of them, but one is stuck on an oil filter bolt that didn't want to come out but it did .

                        Like I said, I have an extra bolt sitting here in my garage that you can have if you need it. It's in pretty good shape, and I actually have another spare on my backup engine if a real emergency ever comes up. Even have at least one spare oil filter cup as well. Oh, and I have some pb blaster sitting in my toolbox if the silicone don't do the trick on that thing.
