  • Need help with some changes

I'd like to change my head light to either one of those bright white lights or if possible the bright blue light. (legal of course). The light that is currently on is kind of lacking in my opinion.I would also love to install a radio or some speakers of some sort so I would be able to listen to the radio or just plug in my phone to listen to music. cost plus what I would need would be greatly appreciated. I'm not super bike smart but I am learning. Here is pic of my bike. Let me know if ya'll need more pics

YES WE NEED MORE PICTURES lol! You have a nice bike, probably has what it takes to make it into the calender. Pick your favorite background and take some pictures! Sorry, can't really help with the radio or headlight. There is some info on HID headlights, just use the search bar and you should find lots of reading material.

For the vetter fairing you would need a speciality that mounts to the fairing called cyclesound. They pop up on ebay and they have a slot for the radio and 2 round speakers.

For the light why not just add a couple driving lights to the lower front of the fairing that you can turn on or off depending on need. As to the hid light that was. Mentioned it was found.that they are actually illegal in the us.

This, I still believe to be opinion. Have not found where Ohio has any laws on the books against them. However, I will say I tried one of the kits that simply replaces your bulbs and found that the light is blinding to oncoming drivers as it works in my 81 Special.

Finding a replacment total light for that square fairing may be difficult at best.

But as was stated most all states have a line adopting the federal standards and that does say they are illegal. And Cy looked specifically at CA (where the OP is from) and it is specifically illegal there.

I have an HID light in my fairing, and love it! Not sure how easy it would be to put on in the rectangular bucket though. As to the legality, I know there are lots of "official" laws out there that most cops will just look the other way. Things like ape hangers are often left alone, just like dangling things from a cage's rear-view mirror is illegal, but it's never mentioned. I tend to believe that as long as your lighting does not dazzle oncoming drivers, most cops won't say a thing about them.

The thunk about the small laws is that they are usually used when a LEO can't find another reason to pull someone over that they want to. I know several highway patrolmen and sheriff deputies that pull everyone possible over for things hanging from the rear view mirror, they usually don't write tickets for it unless the driver fails the attitude test....

Legal is legal and illegal is illegal. I say if you put something in that is not legal it is only a matter of time before you get nailed for it. Especially as cops start coming down harder on the import crowd for their illegal mods, and now your deadly falls into that category.

                Hey Bug,

Have you tried sittign in a car a distance away from your bike with the headlight on? I ask, as I bought the same kit you did, put it in my SH and tried this. That light was absolutely blinding to me sitting in my car. Legal or not, I felt it was a bad deal and pulled it back out as I felt it could / may endanger my life if I blind the drivers coming at me.

                  Law Enforcement

As a retired cop, I can tell you that most PO's ignore the petty traffic reg's.

Yea, a few jerks enforce petty things, but most have better things to do.

Of course bad attitude can turn 1 ticket into 3 very quickly.

I would not worry about running the brighter light.( No, I don't carry PD ID anymore)

No, I haven't physically tested it, but I did make sure to properly aim the beam so the cutoff is at the proper height.

I can tell you that they ARE illegal in Ca unless the entire light assembly is designed for the HID and so far I have only been able to find the round ones, and they run about $500 for a single light system, but the ARE 50 state DOT legal, at the federal level, which means all 50 states no matter what.

As for the radio, your in luck. I gotta find it, but I just happen to have an extra cyclesound pod for the Vetter fairings (which while yours says Yamaha, its made by Vetter) sitting in my garage. I got two of them with my bike, and if I can find the one without a radio in it, you can have it.

As for the light, I've had really good luck with the silverstar bulbs, and you should be able to use any H4 bulb in that light housing, and the silverstars give a pretty good light, just make sure that the reflector is clean and in good shape, if it's dirty you might need to clean the inside of the housing out, but their pretty sealed so it should be good but the stock bulbs are pretty dim compared to the silverstars.

PS, rumor according to a CHP friend of mine is they are going to start cracking down on non-legal lights in California this summer.

Bug, I would be interested in hearing the results if were so inclined as to check it.

I lined up the light pretty well in my garage, then I even pointed it as low as the aiming hardware will allow and it still was just plain blinding. I REALLY liked the light output and how well it lit up the road and all. I just could not continue using it after checking that effect.

Well, here's what I got in today's test. Yes, this was during the day, but it was a shaded area, under large trees. I have to say that from the perspective of a small car, though they are unusually bright when compared to standard headlights, the HID (low beam) in my fairing is not dazzling or in any way dangerous. Possibly annoying, but no more so than a modulated headlight. The high beam is definitely dazzling, especially from a rear-view mirror perspective, but what headlight isn't?

Here are some pictures so you can see for yourself.

From the perspective of a car directly in front of the bike, same height as the rear-view mirror:

From the perspective of the closest possible oncoming vehicle - same height as a driver's eyes:
