  • Continental Tires...

Ok, I hate to open up a dreaded 'tire thread', but figured this might be worth shot...

    Anybody ever run these: http://www.jakewilson.com/productDet...&sizeAttr=7112
I've ran the Conti K112 in the past and been reasonably happy with it, but they no longer offer it in a 130/90-17 to fit the rear of a standard (or at least JakeWilson doesn't list it). It's this or Bridgestone Spitfires, but the Contis usually outlasted Bridgestones. The 'Tour' seems to be a upgrade over the K112 too...

Not a lot of choices for the 17" standard rear, but I'm not going to convert to a 16"...

As long as the responses stay specific to the single tire that you are asking about there shouldn't be any debate. If you have run it what did/do you think of it? If you havent run the tire then shut up. I havent run it so now I am going to shut up and go away.

I have not run that tire or continentals on a bike. I had them on a car once......ONCE....for a very brief period of time. Handled, wore, and rode like total crap IMO.

The other thing that's interesting is the Conti has a higher load rating; 827 lbs vs 693 for the Spitfire...

The load rating alone makes it a better tire! The XS is a HEAVY BIKE, and running a tire with a low load rating WILL cause it to wear fast. It will also make it less safe when 2 up, as you will already be at max load. Let me know how they feel on down the road. I'll be looking for new tires for my '78 in about a year, and E-2's are NLA.

I've run those Conti Tours over here in UK, and they are a good, hard wearing tyre. Unfortunately Continental have stopped making them for our market. I tried to get some the last time i changed tyre but no luck. Running Bridgestone Battlax rears on both my XS's at the moment.

I'd like to hear how those tours go too. I'm running a spitfire on the back right now, but I've got a Conti Milestone ready to go on the front but it looks like the tour is the only one available for the back so I'm considering it for my next change on the back. I like the idea of the higher load rating, what with the heavy weight of the bike and all.

Metzlers are good tires! The Bridgestone Spitfires (Splitfires?) tend to check on the sidewalls and they are a double-compound tire. The hard compound is around the center to give better wear but I found them very slippery on rain slick roads.

Thanks, Marshy for the list... it seems that Jake Wilson doesn't carry as many brands (although he is a bit cheaper on the ones they do have).

Continental has always had a decent rep for making a touring tire (much less so for 'sport' tires), you just don't see them that often. What got me looking was my need for tires for the SG I'm putting together (going cheap there; this one will be sold, so new is the main criteria), but I did start thinking about tires for my '78. I probably won't be buying for that one anytime soon or if I do it will be a while before the bike is running... but the Continentals have gone to the top of the list.

I'm running that Conti Tour on the back, and the Conti Milestone on the front. They are replacing the Dunlop Elite II, and 491k. Have about 1,000 miles on them now, and I still am very impressed with them. They seem very sticky, and almost rounder, like a radial, if that makes sense. There isn't much wet pavement here, but I did get enough time in a drzzly rain to feel more confident with them than the Dunlops.[/IMG]

I chose the Conti Marathon for its somewhat similar tread pattern, and I appreciate its ability to resist the freeway rain grooves.
