  • Rich carbs

I just changed the carbs om my XS, have the 142.5 mains and the 45 pilots, it is runing rich now i beleave, the exhaust is burnining my eyes is why i think this where it did not do this with the outher carbs ( 81 special carbs ) what i am wondering is that maybe the air jets may be clouged, would this cause this ? I used carb cleaner on all the jets and the jets seem to be open.
    Got any ideas ?

My first suggestion - don't put your eyes that close to the exhaust pipe - cant' be good for you.

What do you plugs look like? White? Black? Tan?
How does the bike run - good or bad?
Why did you change the carbs if the 81 carbs were working for you?

I don't think you can accurately judge mixture by "eye burn", pull the plugs and check them, take the bike for a ride. If it runs well, and the plugs look ok why mess with it?

You have Jardine aftermarket pipes, and no air box...assuming you have POD filters?? What type...Emgo brand have prominent lip that can interfere with air flow at the carb inlet and it's ports inducing an overly rich condition!

You say 142.5 mains/45 pilots, you HAD 81 carbs...do you now have or are using the OEM 79SF carbs??? Hopefully you didn't have the same aforementioned jets in the 81 carbs? Yes, that would be too rich for those carbs(81)....you jet according to the carb style/year, not the bike year, and then adjust for intake/exhaust mods!

These engines put out way more unburnt hydrocarbons that modern bikes or cars...NO catalytic converter, ERG valves, etc.!!! But yes, read the plugs and check the performance/throttle response.

The 81 carbs were stock and i just used them to get the bike runing and the 79 carbs allready had the jets changed for the pipes and the pods,( pods ar round oval with no lip inside ) what i did sence i posed this was adjust the idel screws and that seemed to help pluss it idels better now, did the bread tie syn. and still need to do the final syn. i have not run it on the road yet and have not checked the plugs yet and wont for a couple of days, got to run up to Iowa and pic up a Horse tomorow.

          hi cowboybob998,

for ur pilot jets, if u can screw them all the way in at idle
and the engine idle either stays the same or increases
then uve gone to big, i think the stock jets are 42.5. jat

              idel screws

It was the idel screws that were out, got them adjusted and all is fine now, it kinda bogs down just a little about 3000 rpm, can this be taken care of with the slide needel /

You find it best to use the center slot on the needles. I never had any luck monkeying with the other slots. Maybe the float levels would be a way to solve that.
