  • XS headlight on an XJ?

Does anyone know if an XS1100 headlight will fight on an 82 XJ1100? What year(s) will fit?
Can't seem to find on for an XJ for under $200. Seems a bit "XSive" to me!
    Thanks!

    Hey there John,

Well, looking at the pictures in the pix section for the 81 Specials, their round headlight assembly looks very much like the XJ's. The XJ's mounting bracket is angled upward more, but the actual bucket looks very similar, but I haven't looked at one real close with this question in mind. Perhaps Jerry, the XJ guru here can shed some more "light" (no pun intended!) on this compatibility problem!?

Hopefully, someone can confirm whether one of them will fit or not. The key seems to be the top rear of the housing. I have a headlight from an XS750, but it seems to need an "indent" at the top rear for clearance of the wireing coming down from the instruments. It either has to have an indented area there, or the shape is different. Maybe a cone shape like the one that was on my Virago, rather than the normal teardrop like the 750 one. What kind of shape is the XS housing?
I'm really starting to wonder if I'll ever get a headlight to fit this thing. I suppose if all else fails I could get another fairing to go back on it, but I really don't care for fairings.
      Thanks!

if you are desperate you cpuld always put a street fighter light unit on it as they are universal, you should check with yamaha to see if the part numbers for the headlights are the same, yamaha use same parts on different bikes but they retain the same part no.good luck keep us informed.

            Headlights

I don't know exactly which headlight you are looking for but these can be made to work... http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/head_and_tail.htm
you may have to find different "ears" for mounting, or turn yours 'over' ? I saw that once, lowering the angle of the headlight.
Don't know if this helps or not.

              Hey there again John,

My XS81SH headlight is cone shaped on the top half, no indent, but does have a large slot for the gauges wiring at the apex of the cone, and then the lower half does protrude out further to allow more room for the other wires running out of the headlight housing to both sides of the steering yoke, along with the aiming tilt and locking slot on the bottom of the bucket.

Come on Jerry, or any others with an XJ, does this sound like the XS light bucket will fit/match the XJ?

Thanks T.C. That sounds like it might work. In the meantime, I found an XJ650 housing on eBay, and it looks like it could work. I was figuring that all the XJ models may use the same one. I put a fairly low bid on it, so I'm not out much money if it doesn't work. I sure appreciate everybody's help on this problem.
BTW, Scoobes, what's a "street fighter light unit"? Any pics?

Don't know if the XS shell will fit on the XJ...one area I've not had to experiment with. Have never had the shell off.

                      update

Well, I won the auction on eBay for the XJ650 headlight shell. Only 9.95. Less than $20 with shipping, so if it won't work, I'm not out much. I'll let everybody know how it works out. Maybe I can add some more info to our XJ knowledge base!

                        Newer Headlights.

Well, all of this talk about headlights, and my recent ride at T.W.O., and seeing the wonderful brightness and quality of illumination from Harley Dave's new Yam's dual headlight system got me to searching. I found some retro fit 7" round clear lens headlights made by Pilot being sold thru JCW that's peaked my interest. But I'm also looking at the possibility of mounting 2 of them[they're sold in pairs! ) at $39.99] side by side on Godzilla....might as well have a good pair of "eyes" for the beast! I don't think I like the over/under pattern as much, and with them side by side, I think I'll get a more wider across the road pattern vs. the over/under, and it might be a more visible and recognizable pattern to the cages!?

I'm gonna have to come up with a spare bucket since I don't want a fancy millenium styled fairing, and of course some different brackets to hold them and stabilize them. Pilot also makes the same light with lighted color accent rings but they want $30.00 more just for the colored rings...I'll pass!

I'm also looking into different ways to add LED type tail/brake lights, as well as LED turn signals....but have found I might have trouble with my standard flasher unit, not having enough current draw thru it to make it work!? May have to get a fancy electronic flasher that will work with low currents. Will keep you all informed of my progress and the $$ and mods needed to accomplish this. The LED's draw only .03/.3 amps running tail/brake lights, vs. the .66/2.25 amps of the 27watts bulbs, and then you double that for dual bulbs lights like on my special, and the double that for my extra light rack, and then double that again for the turn signals...could be a great amps savings for our weak charging systems, that will allow me to run those dual either 55/60watt or even 80/100w headlights!!

                          more info

Well, I received my XS/XJ CD-ROM from our own Rob Mills (kudos!)on Friday, and I've been doing some research on part numbers on headlight housings. So far, it appears that at least the 79 XS Special is the same part as the XJ. The only difference I see is in the part number prefix. The 79 XS # is 3H3-84330-00-93, while the XJ part # is 10M-84330-00-93.
My guess is they are the same part, and the 80 and 81 likely are the same as well. The pic even looks like the same one. So if it turns out that the XJ650 housing won't work, I'll try an XS1100 headlight next.
T.C., let us know what you find out on the LED lights, I'm interested as well. I'm not sure how the "warning control" thingy will handle the different load of the LED's tho.

I was looking at the LifeBrite page (LED brake and turn lights for motorcycles) and they mention the low-current adapter available from JP Cycle. Link to BriteLites FAQ that mentions this is:

                            http://www.web-rider.net/lifebrite/faq.htm

Saw some of the flashing LED brake light units on another bike, plan to add these to my XJ before spring. Really improves visability.

PS: The units draw 35 miliamps.....

Interesting! I may have to try these out, once I finally get this thing road-worthy.
BTW, I just discovered the online microfiche at the Yamaha site. I looked up the headlight housing for the 82 XJ650, and other than the prefix being different again, it shows the same part # as the XJ1100, and the later XS as per my previous message. The XJ650 # is 3J6-84330-00-93. I sure wish I understood Yamaha's parts numbering system!
