I know this is probably a stupid question...but I just removed the carbs to fix a couple vacuum leaks from my bike and I want to check the main jets and the pilot jets to see what sizes they are and would like to know how do I go about that.? This is the first time I ever had a set of carbs off.? My number one cylinder is only running at 100 degrees while all my other ones are running about 300 degrees ...and I have a spark...

You should be able to read the number on them after removing the float bowls, as they're stamped on the ends. This is assuming they haven't been boogered up and your eyes are good enough...

Make sure you have good lighting too! I had to take mine down to my basement shop and hold it just right to be able to read them!

Got it 115 mains and 47.5 pilots
Still can't figure out why my #1 cylinder is running cold though
        2-5 run at 280-310f and #1 is at 100F
Checked for spark and it is good
        Plug isn't fouled

I am guessing something needs some cleaning in there.

Are they all 47.5 pilot jets? I know the 80 and 81 XS come stock with 42.5, seems odd the XJ would jump that high.

I'd have to check again but i already put the carbs back on. The writing is very small on them and it very well might have read 42.5. I'll be pulling them again on sunday to do some cleaning.

No kidding. Had mine out the other day, and I couldn't read them by flourescent light. Had to shine a LED flashlight on them to see what they said.

That is correct for the XJ carbs. Sometimes they even need 50 pilots.
