A 1980 special if just a plain special would be an SG. There is a VIN decoder thread on the site which I don't remember where it is that will tell you for sure what model it is. If it's a midnight special that would make it an LG, all of this is based on it being a 1980 special.

Is kind of a VIN decoder. Sure enough will tell you what you have as long as it is not a frankenbike!

Even if it's a frankenbike, it will tell you what the engine and the frame came from. So you will at least know what the engine and the frame each started out as.

And if the engine and the frame have different numbers go by the number on the frame ALWAYS! (unless your looking for head parts I guess)

              Welcome Jeff

Hope you post pics of your ride soon because we are always hungry for others photos (that sounds kinda odd doesn't it? )

Once you figure out the model and such you can put it in your signature line and then folks have an easy reference for future questions you may ask.

Thats what I was thinking as well... but then that doesnt tell him thats its an SG.

3J6 is the serial # prefix for an 80 Special. If you have that, then its an SG.

Even more importantly, he may be mistaken, which is probaly why he came here and asked, so they could find out! Duhhh!!!

When I saw the add for my current SH, the owner had it advertised as a 79 Special. The one and only pic was not very good, so until I saw it in person I had no idea it was an SH. Someone who had not spent months on this site or owning one of these fine machines would have had no hope of knowing it was not a 79 until they got the title in their hands. And even then, it is not uncomon that an owner finds the title is incorrect as to the year.
