Nate, you lost me there. Told you I was in over my head. I have enough trouble with a stock xs all these mods make my head spin.
Selling it may be the way to go. I don't want to fubar it. We'll see how I make out tonight.
    Thanks, Garrett

I think nate is getting at the fact you have such a modified system, but it still all comes down to the basics of fuel, compression and spark, at the right time. Sounds like your running the stock pickup coils with the stock TCI, but the output from the TCI goes to an MSD iggy box that then controls your coils. If I made the right soup out of it all that is!

Remove your timing cover on the left side of the bike and take a picture of it and post it.

            http://www.msdignition.com/instructiondownload.aspx
Found this page with a bunch of info on motorcycle ignitions and pick ups from MSD.
Looks like a lot of reading tho.
Maybe there is Drag racing forum. With the mods you have that may be the place to look.

It looks like all the other xs's pickup coils, but the vaccum line isn't hooked up. I'm not sure if I removed it when I painted the motor or if it's not needed. That was a question I wanted to answer after it was ready to go.

A buddy was just telling me if the timing jumped a tooth that may happen. I'm on my way out now.

Guess what. When I went out to the garage I started following wires again. I was thinking how could things change so much just by detailing a bike??? I must have messed up a wire with the "POWER CONE" nope they look good.......Oh what's this? the hot wire to the MSD seems awful floppy on the end. Maybe a bad connection? SURE IS! Fixed that and now the popping is gone and it's running just like it was before. Hope that was it.
I ran from the garage on a high note.

Before that I hooked up the pickup coil to the vaccum port on the #2 carb boot (because there isn't a spot on the carbs to hook into) At idle the pickup sounds like a machine gun. tat tat tat tat tat smacking back and forth. That can't be right. I never saw one do that, The ones i've looked at hardly moved. It did advance with the gas though....I wonder what I should think about that?

I know I didn't do anything I said I was going to do, that's usually the way it goes for me. I did pull the plugs and they were really funky black. #2 wasn't it looked pretty white. I cleaned them all up and regapped them with a bigger gap as per the msd instruction sheet. I'm going to run it again in the morning and see what they look like now. I'm sure i'll be checking the float height soon.

There is too much vac coming from that carb boot, you will need to make up some sort of restriction/damper for it. You will be at full advance to soon.

OK then I guess that settles it. The bike had been set up as a cafe drag racer long ago, drag raced and then converted back to a standardish street bike before I got it. I just changed it to a bobber. Seeing that there isn't any other place to plug the vaccum hose into I'm going to say there hasn't been one. I guess that would explain why I didn't remember unhooking it when I painted the motor.

It will just have to run without the vacuum advance. That's just for fuel economy anyways, so for power it doesn't matter. If you really want to have that function, there is a thread where it was figure out how to tap into the bore on another type of carb to get ported vacuum from the proper place and have it work, but you would have to do the same trial and error they did which might not be worth it? They had to drill into the carbs and add a vacuum barb and put a restrictor into it to get it to work. I'm not sure if you want to go to that much work for fuel economy on a high horsepower bobber?

                                Hi Dez,
no way is it "cheating". If you don't have the time or the skills to fix something it's OK to pay someone who does.
BTW, you didn't say, what was wrong with your bike and what did they do to fix it?
