  • Can a bad battery cause a low rpm stumble?

Hi guys, my 11 sat all winter with no prep work due to a huge and unexpected back surgery. I'm getting it running today. The battery was so dead even the horn didn't work. Most of the cells were low on liquid as well. I juped it with my work van and got it running, however it has a pretty bad low rpm stumble. I changed the gas and ran Seafoam through it. It may be something in the carbs, but someone told me that at low rpms the charging system may not make enough juice to run the bike right, whereas at higher rpms it does. I filled the battery and am charging it - I may just need to get a new one. In the mean time, I'm wondering if the bad battery could be the/a cause of the low rpm stumble.

It is possible, these bikes actually run off the battery, and let the alernater charge/recharge it as it runs. And with the stock reg/rectifier the battery gets about 12.5 V at idle, it should jump to about 14 V at around 3500 rpm. So if your battery is just barely hanging on, it could cause the stumble I would think.

One way to tell would be to hook up the jumper cables from the car and start it and see if it has the stumble hooked up that way. You can't drive it, but at least can check it without load (unless it wasn't showing under load anyways). But it's a yes, a bad battery can cause a low RPM stumble.

OK, it seemed like the stumble was worse when it was not hooked up, but then again it may be because there is a load on the engine while riding it while there is no load on it while hooked up. I'm charging the battery right now. Thank you.
