Before you give up on the calipers, have you tried removing them form the bike, and puting plain bolt in the threaded hole for the banjo, then open the bleed screw, and put a greas gun on it, pump grease in there. Should push that piston out. May still be scrap due to bad corrosion, but at least you will know.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

The calipers can very likely be rebuilt; as long as the piston bore isn't seriously damaged or there's any broken bits, you can fix them. New reproduction pistons are available for about $25 each (stainless steel, so no more rust problems), rebuild kits are about the same per caliper. Most that you'll find used will probably need the same, so don't be quick to pitch yours..
Rotors? You can get new ones from EBC, but at about $150 each definitely not a low budget choice. If yours aren't too bad, you can get them resurfaced here: http://www.site.truedisk.net/ ..but still not real lo-buck. Best bet is check the used market; good used rotors can be had for between $10-30 depending type and appearance. There's some trick light-weight rotors available for 650s that will fit XS11 'standards' (more $$$), but they won't go on your special forks/brakes.
If your fronts are stuck, you better go through the whole system as it's likely to be gummed up elsewhere too...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

rotors
I may have a spare set. I think these came off an 81 special. I bought them but found the tolerance below that required for the 79 sf. Find out what your tolerance is and I'll double check these. If Ok, we can stick a deal.mack

I thought the brake rotors were completely interchangable for all models.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

calipers off any year XS750/850/1100 Special will fit.
Rotors off any XS11 and front rotors off a post '76 XS650 will fit.
Note that only later model XS1100 rotors are slotted but unslotted rotors can be drilled.
Or,
check the parts for sale forum, especially Andreas Weiss' offerings, for a complete front fork off a Standard so you can get away from the Special's Weird Harold calipers.Fred Hill, S'toon

slotted
Ya these are slotted, fronts anyway. Back is within tolerance. I know the front calipers are different on the 81's so I'm not sure if the thickness changed as well. These are straight and clean. But thickness is under what my manuals call for.mack

Unless it is an 81 MNS, all the Special calipers are the same 79-81, including the 80 MNS. Of course they are different right hand to left hand though.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

thnx for all replys. ive had bike for 11yrs. money is very tight right now. better half not working. with gas prices now really need to get fixed.going to try to rebuild calipers. rotors are another problem. always flushed brake fluid every 2yrs as maint. always take very good care of bike. last summer had issues with front brakes. seemed if it sat for long periods , brakes would drag. rap on calipers would un stick them, would be fine as long as would ride every day. where i work we own brake shop. have tried in vane to get rotors turned. no one does bikes any more. I work as mechanic and have acess to brake shop, guy there unsure of mc rotors. really dont wont to buy from fleabayanyone have suggestions on where to buy good parts for calipers.when you want something bad enough, don't let anything stand in your way, and don't take "no" for an answer. EVER

Calipers probably just need to be pulled apart and CLEANED. Usually a sticky caliper is from gunk behind the square seal around the piston.
Pull pistons, remove square "O" ring, CLEAN the grove, clean "O" ring with brake fluid, and re-install. Problem will be fixed 95% of the time.
For rotors, you can use ANY XS11, XS650"late" rotor. should not be that hard. Just give Andreas a PM and see what he has.Ray Matteis
