Are the 1978 and 1979 tanks and side covers on the standard models interchangeable? The 1979 special is a different design.

Well, 78 through 80 standard tanks are interchangable, and 79 through 81 special tanks. The 81H tank will interchange onto others, but may have clearance problems on some due to it's capacityOriginally posted by natemoen View Post
on bikes with fairings. Swapping tanks between standards and specials also have their own issues which must be addressed. So for direct bolt on replacements, see my first sentence, otherwise, you CAN make any tank from any year 11 work. For that matter, you would probably make almost any tank from any other bike with a normal type tank work if you are willing to do enough custom work, but that's another book.

It doesn't take much to make any of the XS tanks work. Mine had a special tank on it when I got it.
