  • Throttle Shaft Clearance

Started putting my F carbs together tonight and noticed there is what I feel to be an excesive amount of clearance between the carb body and the washers on the shaft. I probably didn't notice it when I was taking them apart cause of all the garbage on the carbs. How much is too much? I am guessing .020"-.025" of clearance. It wouldn't be a problem to make up new copper spacers (washers) to tighten things up, but if it's not needed I won't worry about it.

    hi tim,
i had a look at a spare set of carbs ive
got sitting around, with the butterfly open
there would be 20-25 thou of clearance where u stated
and the shaft move sideways, with the butterfly
    closed the shaft sits firm.

I thought the same when I rebuilt my carbs and I even went as far as putting a thin washer in. The result is that the throttle stuck open! I've had three sets of carbs recently and they all have that clearance. I would say it's supposed to be there. There's the tab washer and one other washer on the shaft, I think? Any tighter than that and it's dangerous IMO...

That is the answer I was expecting. I was concerned that the gap wouldn't allow the seals to do what they were suppose to do. The last thing I want to do is tear everything apart and start over. Thank you for your help.
