  • stuck shim bucket

I am putting my head back together and one of the shim buckets is stuck. It wont go in and it wont come back out. It is currently about 1/3 of the way in. Advice?

I got the bucket out but there is a slight ridge in the bucket hole. Should just lightly sand the ridge out or something else?

Nate, is it possible that you mixed-up the buckets? They're supposed to stay with their original holes. if it came out of there, it SHOULD go back in. Was the 'ridge' there before or was it caused by trying to force the bucket in?

IIRC, I ran into a similar problem a while back that I solved by giving it a light rub with some 1200 grit sandpaper, just a very light touch.

All buckets are going back in tge same hole. I think the ridge is there from taking it out. I had to lightly tap on it sideways because it seemed to be cocked, I didn't force it in.

Then I would go with Ken's advice. Also, lube it before inserting, but you already know that.

Yup I brushed oil into the hole and all around the bucket.

                Bucket edge

Sounds like it got a little cockeye, which is easy to do. When I put my head back together I noticed a couple buckets didn't fit smoothly. I took a fine oilstone and touched up the edges and they went right in with no drag.

                  ice cube? co2?

                  Nate

Can you put an ice cube or chunk of dry ice in the bucket to shrink it?

I have a co2 tank that I can squeeze shots out of to apply cold but either the wet or dry ice will do the same.

Warming the whole thing up with a heat gun will solve your problem.

Nate, I think he means heating the head, not the bucket. Same heating / freezing methods make bearing and race installs a snap. Heat the outer part and freeze the inner part

Sanded the ridge out, still didn't want to cooperate really. Tossed the bucket in the freezer, and heated up the head and she dropped right in.

Put everything together and then had a brain fart and bent some valves.....
