My pipes and the collectors on them were rusted away. I had the down pipes and collectors from an 80 Midnight, so I used them. Had to change the studs on the engine. I didn't have any good mufflers, but I ran across a pair of Harley Road King muffs in like new condition. With some adapter parts from fleet farm and some welding, I have them on my 79F (standard) without crossovers. They work great, the bike pulls strong from low RPM to red line. I posted that there is a set locally (central WI) for $40. These muffs are not hard to find, Harley riders HAVE to make max noise, so they scrap them. Mine are about as loud as original, perform well, and look really mean from behind.
