missing 5th gear

I found that I am missing 5th gear on my 79XS...When I kick up to the 5th gear spot it just comes back (and stays at 4th). I read every post I could find about similar symptoms and found the 5th Gear Blues post.

I then found the following post where Ken had some GREAT pictures of the shifter side of the tranny Shifter Pics . I am trying to see if the "dowels" mentioned in the "5th Gear Blues" post are in these pics...I can't see where they would be.

I would like to have a better idea what I am looking fore before I open her up.

One last thing....dumb question...but I need to drain the oil before I open the left/shifter side up right?

No Problem

Trapper yes drain the oil, it is a eazy fix the part was availbe at my dealer 3 bucks, everything is right there when u take the side cover off, just pay close attention to how the gears are set before u pull them off HTH.......MITCH
